Sunday Flying

Post by mcgowantk »

The forecast for Sunday has improved dramatically and now there is a NNW 10-15 forecast for the area. I am pretty certain I will give it a try although I am not certain where - perhaps High Rock.

HR it is for Glen, Gregory and I. Can't face another 2 hour drive into the depths of VA. We'll be there at 11.

I am having trouble deciding, but I am leaning to Woodstock. Text forecats are stronger than yesterday, but the ADDS isobars show less wind. I may hit the road and make a decision on the way out to the mountains.

Joe

I believe I know the answer to this, but any chance the Woodstock road is open?

First post in a while—Holly and I rode our motorcycles up to High Rock in time to see a whole gaggle of pilots who we didn't know! Granted, we've been away for the past year or more, but it was surprising (and encouraging) to see so many mountain pilots that were new to us.

Present were Carlos, Dave Bodner, Shawn, Mike Lee, Glenn, Bob, Janni (sp?)...and a few other pilots I didn't know.

Janni got set up and was first off shortly after 1pm (I think). It was blowing straight in 12-18, some stronger cycles but not bad, with some 7-10mph lulls. Janni soon got up to 400-500' over...then was followed by Glenn and Bob. Everyone elevatored right up and looked to be having a good time.

It was nice for Holly and I to get close to flying again. We're both determined to get back in the air this spring and get current, so being bummed I wasn't up there with everyone was good motivation!

Reports...

Post by Danny Brotto »

Flew the sailplane today. Radio chatter reports of hang gliders flying near Thompsontown (Raven Haven?) and bags at Woodstock. Got 3 1/2 hours in thermals, ridge, and mild wave (to 7000 ft.)

It was a good day to be outside today. As Mike stated there was a pretty nice turnout. My friend Kenny and I arrived around 12:30 at the LZ to see what it looked like. We spotted a cool looking Trek bike at the pavillion with a motor on it. It turns out that it was Bob Buchanan's ride back up to launch. Did it have the mustard to get you back up Bob? Pretty cool man.
It was a bit strong at first so I waited a little while and then started to set up. I helped Janni off first, then Glen, then Mike, then Carlos. I was then in line behind David B., who had a good launch, good flight and good landing on the MarkIV. Nice! I launched in 10mph straight in with the help of Greg, Mark C. and Rusty.( Thanks Guys!) Rusty helped every pilot who came up on the cube. Some good experience for him and a good taste of what he is in for!
AHHHH HAA HA HA, AHHHH HAAAAa HAAAA Ha ( laughing loudly like DR. Evil)
Good ridge lift. Good thermals. Stay up as long as you wanted!
Mike L. is flying well and seems to be making good decisions.
I managed 45-50 mins and 1200 over.
I stopped in at Emma's on the way out. ( had to go drop my friend Kenny off, or I would have come back up) Emma was at the sink and turned around with two huge baby bottles with two huge nipples on them. I said my what big kids you have around here. She laughed and said they were for her twin calves. I sat down and talked with Her and Randy for a while and then rolled out.
It was a good day to be out! Spring is coming!

I had fun.
Peace, Shawn.

Woodstock Sunday

The crowd was Tom, Pete, Steve, Gary, Bruce, and Joe for the hang gliders and Tom C., Jeff, Noah, Ellis(maybe no fly), and at least two or three others.

For the hang gliders it was great. Tom and Pete flew to Harrisonburg. Gary Bruce and I had an enjoyable time along the ridge and in the valley and landed in the bridge field so we could hike over the mountain to retireve the cars. Most everyone got at least 3000 over. Steve had the altitude record of 10,000msl over Fort Valley. He landed over the back. Overall it was nice followed by beer at my house.

Think Dickey's on Tuesday.

Good day at Woodstock. Pete, Tom, Joe S, Gary and me HG. Pete and Tom made Hburg.

I got to 10k in wave (I assume that's what it was). Made 4k over above the ridge in back of Fort Valley and turned to come back toward launch. Kept going up at 100 to 200 fpm. Never quit for 30 minutes or so. I was flying trim and staying pretty much over the center of the valley but slowly drifting south. (this led to a eureka moment for the mentally challenged with my GPS -- note to self: GPS does not care which direction you are pointed) Ended up in back of the Edinburg Gap. The last 2-300 ft were very slow. Almost gave up a couple of times. Never seen wave with winds that light. Never seen wave where you drifted along the axis.
