Lookout

Post by Flying Lobster »

Lookout was booming yesterday. Some pilots got to around 7K in thermals 800-1000 fpm. It's hard to believe that things are only going to get better when spring arrives--but that's what the locals tell me.

I only got to 5500 msl and 2.5 hours--but that was partially because I decided to do a little local local xc running--went up to the north point--across the valley to just short of Trenton and then half way back up to north point for about 30 miles total. Pretty sore today--as you can count on getting tossed around if you launch at prime time. One of the most perfect all-around flying communities I've ever been to.

'nother boomin day at Lookout today--600 to 760 fpm and a strong shear to boot. This place has got some pretty big air. Another 2.5 hours. Don't know why--but that seems to be my standard time perflight.

Is that the size of your bladder  :?: :?: :?:

Just kidding (or maybe I'm not?). Anyway, I'm happy for you that you get such good flying.

Hey, Marc-

Enjoying reading about your flights and hope you're happy with your new home. You mentioned flying your paraglider at Lookout in an earlier post. Alek, Jim and I were there a few years ago. I don't remember seeing pg's. Where did you launch?

I've been suprprised that the school hasn't started teaching PG.

PG launches can be done off the main ramp--but as a pratical matter are not widely permitted simply because of the very heavy HG activity. It's pretty easy--but I could see a bad accident happening if the conditions got funky or an inexperienced pilot tried to force launch with a bad inflation. It is a true cliff launch. Matt T is up to his eyeballs in HG training and running the site--so I don't see a much motivation to get PG instruction going. I've considered teaching here--but then I'd have to go off and develop new training and mountain sites myself. I'm having too much fun rediscovering hang gliding right now!

Hey Marcel--nice to hear from you!

Any plans for some more awesome flying this year?

A few SE PG pilots are secretively mumbling about 100 to 200 mile pg flights around here--might just happen from Alabama. I've noticed that the period of thermal activity is both stronger and longer than in regions to the north.
