HR Saturday
I talked to Emma Jane. The road to the LZ is good. And things are melting there fast. High of 40 tomorrow with NW winds of 10-15.
The more the merrier!

HR WX observations
The RAP is showing winds aloft in the valley NNW to N~ 30 mph 2:00 PM
Right now at 8:00 AM it is still really blowing in quite strong with periods of calm and then a blasts that could knock a bull over...
However, the suface winds appear to be ~5- 10 NNW for 2:00
What say ye Shawn ? How are conditions to the north of HR ?
Call if if ?'s 304-279-3131
'Til then, Mike

All I know is , that I'm sitting here 10 NM SSW of High rock and the wind can rip a house door outta your hand .... BTW the RAP says 3K..... all I'm doing is relaying what has been reported....
It is possible that the RAP is inaccurate, so in that event, I mght as well stop by and check it out..... On my way back from Baltimore...

It's possible that all the forecasts are inaccurate as they often are all inaccurate. Still heading to the Rock.

Medium-sized crowd showed up for a light wind day. Tom M, Kelvin, and Carlos were setting up when I got there. Tom launched first and was still flying hours later. No one else had the same luck. Matthew and Karen came. Mike Lee came quite a bit later.
I launched after Kelvin and headed straight for the LZ. Apparently I had a bit of an "oh sh*t" kind of launch in 3-5 mph, though it didn't feel that bad. My wing was level, but I kind of sunk off launch. Probably should've had my nose lower. I could've started my run further back, but I really wanted to be in what little air there was.
I had been unhappy with my previous couple of flights on Daniel's old Mark IV; it felt like I was hanging too far forward. Before my flight I swapped the positions of the primary and back-up hang loops so the primary is now behind the secondary. So much nicer. No longer handles like a truck without power steering. At trim it's still flying nicely, maybe a bit of a right turn.
So, a not-so-great launch. Some PIOing. Chalk it up to new glider and rusty winter flying skills.
EJ seems to be doing fine. I was shocked that mine was the first entry in the 2007 log book. I guess January was cold.

Seems as if the RAP was a bit foregoing, and I digress......
Other then that, turned out to be quite a nice wintery flight....of which
~30 minutes and reached slightly above the base of the tower...
Sorry to see that some of the guys had extendos, but wasn't it great to be the first group to fly in '07 ....
Many thanks to Kelvin and Karen and Rhonda for help with the
launch...
And BTW, please keep Rhonda in your thoughts and prayers, as
she is scheduled for major neck surgery ( vertibrae fusion ),
this coming tuesday.....we will be leaving the area monday evening
for Philadelphia.....
PS. Rhonda's brother Derek was thrilled to watch... don't believe he'll
trying it though....

I had a nice flight at the Rock with a little over 2 hours of airtime and a max altitude gain of 1000 over. Most everyone seemed to get above launch. It was interesting that it was soarable with so little wind.
Dave - I think launching from the edge is a good way to launch from the Rock. My thought is that whatever I could gain from running from farther back, I could easily lose by not maintaining a good nose angle. Plus, with it being soarable, I also like to get my glider out into the wind. The wind could always pick up to be strong enough that I would not be comfortable running off. My standard practice now is to launch from the edge.

Cervical fusion? I had one about 1996. Very scary going into it, I know how she must feel. Best of luck.mikel wrote:Seems as if the RAP was a bit foregoing, and I digress......![]()
