I'd love to go but I don't have a glider right now. Anyone able/willing to rent me a big ass glider for $$$?. Tandem or Falcon 225 would be just fine, anything would fold up at my wing load.

Spare Glider

Post by Matthew »

Janni,

You can use the spare Mark IV 19. I think David Bodner has it. Yes, you will be heavy on it. But it will still fly. I've soared 132's and flown even smaller gliders a Ridgely.

I hate to come out in public, but what the f%$*, I'm hooking in at 270lb. You're sure I can fly it without snapping the side wires or shredding the sail?

Could be a good Dickey's Ridge Day.

I'm not sure the Mark IV is a 19. Might be smaller. However, I used to fly a Falcon 140 to no ill effect on glider or pilot.

These things are tested to, what, 6Gs? You won't bust it. And the sidewires look pretty new.

Weekend Flyin' ???

Post by Matthew »

Hmmm. If this front roll through on Friday, Saturday may be good at the Rock or Pulpit. Where's the Bacil-cast?????

Joe, might be good at Dickeys. But we don't have permits. Got them one year a few years ago and never used them. Unlikely that we ever will fly there.

HR This Weekend...

Post by Danny Brotto »

I think weather-wise, HR is a good call for Sunday however the expanded TFR will be in effect until 10:30 am Tuesday. POTUS will be in Crawford next weekend.

Latest blow-cast has increased for Sunday with McConnelsburg being strong... but I don't believe it. Should be okay there on Sunday.

Pacific air mass passing through. Not much of a temp drop. It should be more breezy than cranking, but tomorrow is gonna be very nice for those that can fly. Bacil

Now, if Marc and Matthew are both headed to the Pulpit tomorrow, Xmas eve, then maybe a humble P-2 has a chance at an observer? (Have references.) Will check with other habitual bagwingers. Anyone doing WS as alternative? If I made it that far up north, however, I guess I'd have to make it early. Some sort of ritual religious observance tomorrow, I hear. John

Pulpit's lookin like a definite possiblility--though it might be strong for PGs early in the day--but should drop and be bagwing schweet by the afternoon. If no other observer is available who is better acquainted with your flying I may huck ya off.

I'm thinking of heading to the Pulpit also. Looks to be good there for most of the day with winds diminishing in the afternoon.

Gary, Joe S., Bruce and I rendezvoused at Woodstock after 1130. (Gary called me while I was pre-flighting the trike at Front Royal - the fog was being cleared by and EAST wind, while Gary was reporting blue skies and west (cross) wind out front at Woodstock. I found the windshear at 2000 and landed quickly - to the WEST, as the wind had done a 180 in ten minutes.) While we were setting up it was light, cross and switchy, but it got stronger. Gary launched first in a straight cycle and headed south, gaining steadily. Joe had a strong launch and climbed quickly. Bruce helped me launch and then self-launched. The lift was abundant, reliable and fairly smooth, although Joe had some pucker when he got low while heading north for a landing at the Strasburg High School. The rest of us landed in the LZ after 90 minutes. Surprisingly good day for such a pronounced crosswind. I flew between 600 and 1300 over. Gary said he got to 1800 over; Bruce got to 2000 over. We repaired to Joe's and Zelda's for libations and snacks. Got back to the city in time to finish my shopping. Let's do it again tomorrow!

Leaning towards Woodstock

Post by Matthew »

NOAA forecast for Winchester...

Sunny, with a high near 50. West wind between 5 and 10 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

ADDS 3K shows cranking winds.

Anyone wanna meet in the Woodstock LZ at 11:30am?
