Woodstock effect for 10/28 - 29

Post by silverwings »

Looks pretty windy for this upcoming weekend. Anyone think the Woodstock effect (lower wind velocities) might make if doable???

The only chance is Sunday PM? I'm willing to gamble.

If Woodstock moves out from under the veil of the high wind umbrella as the umbrella moves to the NE all day Sunday, then there's a slight chance that it may be flyable late PM. Extreme caution about being caught in wave and a late-day throttleup of the winds should be exercised.

John, what do you think about after 3PM at Woodstock? I think that Woodstock will throttle back at 3PM tomorrow. Anybody interested?

I could get pretty interested in taking a shot at it.

I am not real optimistic but will look at the reports (guesses) on Sunday morning.

When guessing how early or late in the p.m the winds my reduce, remember that with the time shift, sunset is 5:15 tonight.

As of 9:00 a.m. I'm still looking at the numbers and pondering. Wanna fly. Don't wanna get blown out. I'll stay on the fence a bit longer.

I'll be passing through the Woodstock area late this afternoon,
and might swing by just to take a look. Would appreciate a call
if anyone decides to give it a try...

(I remember a day with wind forecasts in the 30's that turned
out to be a decent WS day, year ago or so. But today's
"gusts of 45 diminishing to gusts of 35" doesn't sound all
that promising.)

I am passing for today partly because I have a party to go to early this evening. I think there is atleast a 50/50 chance that it will be doable late afternoon 4:00 PM or so. Good luck to any that go and please report.

Big gamble

I'll stop by and see. If anything I'll find out how close are conditions to the forecast.

ETA around 2:30PM

Sailplane flying today...

Post by Danny Brotto »

Went to the airport to possibly fly the sailplane today. Decided to leave it in the box. One pilot did launch and reported conditions to be a bit nutzo. He was trashed on his landing approach to the point that he opted out of the airport and set down in a large adjacent field. Wind was gusting to over 40 on the ground (recorded a gust to 71 overnight!). First time I've ever seen a sailplane out of control on landing due to wind turbulence.

Must have been the Woodstock effect.

The sounding readings that I got were with specific GPS coordinates.
The strongest gust I measured was 20mph (at around 2:30PM) and at times it would almost go to zero. I went to the tower and the wind was much lighter, but with all the trees in front of it I don't think is very reliable.
After sitting there a while I notice cycles every 15 minutes it would pick up and then it calm down. The direction was about 45 degree or more cross from the left. When it lighten up it would come straight in the slot.

The biggest question was the logistics. I launched at around 4:30PM and landed at 5:00PM. By the time I broke down the place was dark, just in time.

During the flight there was a noticeable cross West but enjoyable, wish the sun stayed up a little longer.

Mark didn't set-up because it was late and Randy broke down because he discovered a bolt he wanted to fix.

Big thanks to Mark and Randy for helping launch and Randy for the ride back to the top.

Way to go Carlos! You're probably the only pilot in the northeast that managed to fly over the weekend. RichB

Thanks for the flight report Carlos. BTW, this coming weekend looks less windy and a NW to N flow. Should beckon a few more pilots out to go flying.

That "gusts to 45" in the AM forecasts probably bummed
everyone out.... But as it turned out, WStock was totally
flyable Sunday, at least late in the day. Single-surface
perhaps not, but anyone else who'd been there definitely
would have flown.

Ya never know!
