Sailplane OTB 'Burg.

The sailplane that flew over you by about 500 ft when you were about 4000ft MSL was Mike Smith. Mike was flying and LS-8, the same model glider I fly but his contest numbers (displayed on the lower right wing and the vertical stabilizer) are “XM”, mine are “P6”. At dinner on Saturday evening, he mentioned that he had encountered a paraglider OTB from McConnelsburg… so yes, he saw you :-)

Our task on Saturday was Potomac (the airport at Hancock), Waggoner’s Gap (that south facing HG site near Carlisle that was discussed on the forum a number of months ago) and then Taneytown. The total distance was about 153 miles. You encountered XM while he was on the Potomac -to-Waggoner’s Gap leg. Mike Smith started late; a group of 5 or 6 of us had covered the same area about 45 minutes earlier.

I did pretty well. We all had to shift gears throughout the flight as there were areas of strong lift (600 ft/minute +) but lots of big blue stretches where 100 ft/minute was worth circling in. It was pretty interesting racing. Scoring is based on speed with handicaps for different glider models.

Hope you had a good flight. Winds were pretty light westerly but the area that you were flying in had decent lift.

Matthew,
Did any hang gliders make it OTB? Just curious.

Pulpit OTB Sunday

Post by Matthew »

No Bacil. Just me. Made it two miles West of Greencastle on Route 16. Could have made it further. Started my approach at about 1800agl because it looked like the last good field before going over the city. Winds were out of the West and light at altitude, out of the North at the Pulpit launch and LZs. But it was strong SW on the ground OTB in the valley. Got 4K over and 90 minutes. The hangies had sleds, extendos and Brian VH got about 15 minutes. Lazlo and (new to the area) Tammas did well in PGs with long flights. Charlie and Jim K. also had decent PG flights. I found good solid lift everywhere along and in front of the ridge at the Pulpit. Lots of lift OTB till I ran into a blue hole.
