CALL FOR REGION NINE 2005 X-C FLIGHTS
To All Pilots Who Flew in Region During 2005:
Happy New Year. The 2005 Yearlong X-C Contest is now at an end and I am soliciting from you information on your single longest flight in the Region this past year. I would like to hear from any pilot, not just those who entered the spring Regionals, who had a 2005 cross-country flight in the Region. This appeal is directed to all pilots who flew in Region Nine, irrespective of their residence and the type of glider flown (Rigids, flexwings and paragliders). In essence I am attempting to compile a comprehensive list of each pilot?s best cross-country flight of the year. Even if your flight might have been short, please submit it.
While 2005 wasn?t a brilliant year, there were patches of light amidst the darkness. Early in the year the Tobacco Row boys had a preposterous string of great flights, while in early summer the Ridgeley tow park produced many good flights that were only limited by the DelMarVa Peninsula?s geography. Spring produced some astounding gains behind Cumberland, and late summer had some interesting eastern Ohio tow flights. We in western Pennsylvania had an indifferent year with the exception of one awesome day. At this point I am unaware of much flying in eastern Pennsylvania or western Ohio. I would dearly like to hear of flights in those extremities of Region Nine
For those of you who have already submitted to me your longest flight, one that occurred during the Regionals, there is no need to respond.
The information I require from each of you is,
Name/Address/email/phone, etc:_______________________________
Date of flight:______________________________
Site from which you flew:___________________
Name and phone number of a witness/driver, etc to vouch for you?re your flight:______________________________________________________________
Glider:_____________________________________
Your longest XC flight east of the Mississippi prior to March 15, 2005:____________
That will let me know into which class I should place you.
In addition, please tell me of any noteworthy features of your flights: personal bests, site records, altitudes, birds, retrieval tales, etc. for the article I will submit to Hang Gliding. (Note for Lauren Tjaden: invent something salacious again, won?t you?) Photos, tracklogs and barograph traces are highly desirable for illustration of the article.
I hope that this will give many of you an opportunity to dig through your logbooks and relive some good flying during these dreary winter evenings. Lord knows I have to go back a long way to find my last good flight.
Regards,
Pete Lehmann, with two Ns, dammit (not dang it)

31 MAY 05
Ridgely, Md (Highland)
Paris Williams , Jim Rooney (looking for phones numbers). Jim drove
retrieve.
Aeros Discus B 160
1.1 miles (Prior to Mar 15, 2005)
this flight was my 2nd intentional XC for ... I took a mid week XC class
with Paris Williams at Highland and was the only student for the day!! As
it turns out, the day was an amazing one, with 6500' and 600 fpm all day
long and long, long streets available with dolphin flying and thermals and
downwind glides aplenty. My second intentional XC and third overall...
incredible. Landed very near Ocean City and Paris said we could have done
100 mi if we had left earlier and I hadn't stated "the beach" as my goal.
An incredible improvement over my first deliberate XC of 2.2 miles and my
previously noted 1.1 miles inadvertent back in 2004. WOW. I have a photo
and tracklog somewhere if you're still interested. TOTAL DIST 58 +
statute miles.... I flew later flights of 46 and 31 after this training,
FUN!!
Had fun flying with you on the ECC, but still my apologize for cutting you
out of that 400' bubble we were in. Cheers Pete

Everyone,
I'm pretty sure Pete Lehmann is going to want them sent to the email address on the cc line above, and not simply back to the list server.? I don't know if he routinely checks our posts.

I'm sure John will say he posted this here by accident but....WE ALL KNOW he did it on purpose so he could brag about it one more time!!

P.S. I almost did the same thing but Lauren walked by and being nosy like she usually is, she read over my shoulder and noticed the address was wrong.

What Paul said... I'm sooo transparent. Just latch onto a National
champion, that's my advice.
Sorry
