The problem is that it's impractical to have two pilots check each
other out prior to taking off at the same time (the equivalent of the
buddy system in diving). Either one of the pilots must be unhooked to
perform the safety check of the other, or he has to do it from a
distance of 30-40 feet.

Years ago on the old list server we got into a thread about watching
out for each other, and I remember suggesting that we could adopt a
"buddy system" like the one done in scuba diving.
