Brian and Hugh,
When it comes to protecting flying sites, I’m not comfortable with the assumption that corrective action will be accomplished in private. I believe that one of the most significant deterrence goals for this happening again (by any of us) is the knowledge that we will be exposed to the entire community. A significant aspect of basic leadership skills is to accurately assess the overall significance of the event/issue to the whole community and leaving a significant number of experienced pilots in the dark is not part of that process. However, I do respect your opinions and thanks for sharing them. Ward

Re: Daniels Incident 12/4/13
Put yourself in the position of a new pilot who has made a bone-headed mistake (that basically includes nearly everyone here). Now how do you feel if your name is publicly posted as one who has made the bone-headed mistake. You'd feel ostracized, and it's likely you'd leave the community and never come back. Given that nearly all of us have made bone headed mistakes, the question of protecting sites becomes moot because there's nobody left to fly them.
Once you've been flying a bit and feel you are part of the community most likely you'll post your mistakes yourself, and people can reasonably expect it and can reasonably call you out for mistakes made.
There's a fine balance between protecting sites and protecting pilots. Everybody is allowed at least one impulsive mistake and the right to learn from it. If a pattern develops, then yes, the needs of the site will overweigh the needs of the pilot.
My opinion, of course.

I agree Ward. I encourage all pilots to self-report incidents. The feedback I've received has been helpful. I need to think more like a mentor when I meet new/visiting pilots. One of the goals of the new website is better written/visual information for them. Mentoring is a big responsibility and investment in personal time that needs to be planned for. But sometimes we get paid back with free retrieves and beers after a big XC!

I agree with Hugh on his leadership principle and Brian regarding self disclosure. The policing of the issue is best handled by the BOD.

What are the chances this guy is going to bandit Daniel's again after what happened? And what is the evidence that the site is endangered? We have a conscientious and highly effective club officer on the case. I trust him to handle this in a way that guides this new pilot to safe and correct behavior without destroying him when his confidence is already shaken.
