Got there at around 11:00AM. On the way we saw blue sky in the valley but thick clouds on the ridge, from that point it look overcast. Once on the ramp it was a lot better more sun and good wind direction on the strong side (15mph). Launch second, at first tried to play the sunnier sections along the ridge ended up above the primary. About 10 min into the flight I hooked a monster one took me to cloud base (~5300MSL). I had to go home early but couldn’t resist, there were clouds forming in the valley. It looked bullet proof. The thermal started weakening, then headed out to the next cloud. Nothing, no great sink, but no decent lift either. Ended up only 10 miles out. Just when I landed, Peter stop by and help break down in less than 15 and was back on the road, couldn’t ask for any better than that.

Congratulations to all on great flights and just an all-around nice weekend. At the risk of being excommunicated for apostasy and whoring off to the dark side of powered and fixed-wing flight, I will report that we spent Saturday putting the nose wheel and the new topless/strutted wing on the trike. Partner Steve continued alone to install the fuel tank and do a lot of wiring, throttle cable and fuel lines Sunday. Expect a test flight next weekend.

I took a lesson in the Husky tow plane at the sailplane club in Front Royal Sunday AM (first lesson since March, but landings are improving), then went up as a passenger in a vintage 1968 British Slingsby WOODEN glider. Towed out to Signal Knob on the same ridge as Woodstock and worked very minor lift for 45 minutes, ended up landing out near Maurertown. Retrieval is a bit more involved using a custom trailer, but these guys remove the wings and store their aircraft in the trailer all the time anyway. But this was only the second time the owner had landed out. Friendly farmer. After all this, and having missed lunch, I was tired and headed home. Got a call from Tom Ceunen that he had launched form Dickies and landed among the McMansions between Markham and Marshall - and couldn't seem to hitch a ride. It was a beautiful drive in the horse country. Tamas also flew at Dickies. LE, Laszlo, and Jim Kaplan flew Woodstock until sunset. - Hugh

A great day at the Pulpit. Got there just after 11A. Launched in 12 to 18 just after 12 noon. Spent a good hour just playing in the plentiful but narrow "racetrack" lift upwind. Got up to 4400' MSL under a nice big cloud just above the golf course. Finally saw Meadow Grounds Lake for the first time from the air. A pair of redtails frolicked with me for a few seconds. Saw Carlos launch and decided to head over and check out launch for yuks. Lost down to 500' over over launch. Carlos specked out down by Rt. 16, so I got there just as he headed OTB stinking high. On the way a mature bald eagle flew just past me. Of course, I didn't have the camera on. Next time! I flew upwind and found good lift to 4500' MSL and slowly drifted OTB under a large dark cloud. Just over the second ridge there was a big blue hole downwind, so I flew upwind and tried to get up higher with the cloud. Gained a couple hundred, maxed out at 4900' MSL, but started sinking, so I took off for a wispy downwind. Didn't find much and put down in a huge field next to Lemar Road at LeMasters. It was honking on the ground out of the west. Carried over to a tree line to break down. Lo and behold Pete Adams and Carlos show up and give me a body ride. What timing. Got the truck and retrieved the glider. Back at launch I helped launch a good number of pilots. Was going to fly again, but decided to hit the road by 6P. John Dullahan also went OTB, got to 6200' MSL, and made it past 81 SE of Chambersburg. Some pics follow.

and Dan's awesome vid! Really enjoyed all the action with other gliders, redtails, etc.
And the photos looking back at the ridge from stinkin' high in the valley. Nice job!!
