remembered this & thought it might be worth a chuckle - 'cause hey, otherwise, what's the point of it all.

here's the thing about " an advanced technique for proper conditions"

an observer assists a newbie the first couple of times by merely helping them choose safe conditions for their first launches. then by 'observing', they start to get the sense of the person and a sense of their flying. as that sense develops, the envelope of what is 'safe' or 'potentially safe' for the newbie (who we will now call the 'advancing pilot') expands. the observer attempts to help the newbie, err advancing pilot, expand that envelope safely - but at the same time not Too restrictively, as they are generally by then (if not having always been) chaffing at the bit.

so that's:
a] why i shouldn't have been giving 'flying tips' on the forum - first, a person has to either be 'current' or familiar and trusted and second, 'Observing' is a much too subtle process.
b] Dan was justified in making his comments.
c] what i meant by "explaining" the broad guidelines that keep newbies and all pilots safe - it eventually All becomes about the 'judgement' that one repeatedly hears everyone mention and reinforce. reinforce to others and to themselves.

so, no harm, no foul?
fly safe.

and really That's It! this is supposed to be about getting a SE site open, not some old fart prattling on. ;)

Gary D,

I don't think we've met but I'd sure like to meet you. It's going to be about a year before I get back in the air. Maybe we could dust off the dust together and both get back into the sky. The only thing better n bringing a new pilot into the sport is bringing an old one back into it.

Well maybe not the only thing but that's a discussion for "ground bound fun" or something.

'appreciate the sentiment.
as of now i haven't been able to talk my physical therapist into even the possibility of a tandem ride. she'll probably continue to stall me for another month til i see the surgeon who did my back surgery, he/i might want to do more.
yeah, boo-hoo-hoo for me, but lets just leave it there, shall we?

a year? i may be recognizable by the walker i'd be using and the drool in my beard. hah!
