For local sites the best thing to use is Cragins weather links page
http://members.cox.net/cragins/

If it manages to be flyable at the Pulpit tomorrow I'll try to come out early for launch crew duty, but it's not needed at Daniels.

Launch Code

Post by Matthew »

Daniel's faces SW. Closest city is Charlottesville, VA. You need 4x4 to drive to launch.. or at least lots of ground clearance. Tight LZ. Best local site for PGs. Must be H3 or P3 or have Observer who is familiar with site.

Looks like maybe the whole weekend at Daniels--lookin SSW now both days. Looks like a paraglide weekend--I'll be bringing out the tandem rig as well if anyone is interested.

Might be persuaded to go elsewhere if upper winds clock around more westerly--Daniels can be nasty in those conditions.

It will be west in the AM at the Pulpit.? Predicted to go SW at 1PM.? I'll be there early to catch the last vestiges of the westerlies with Shawn and Ashley.

You guys remember what I said weeks ago?? The Pulpit sometimes works in a SW forecast, and tomorrow is one of those days where it will be working from the west in the AM till into the PM before the switch!? Take a chance for pete's sake.

I'll consider going if it looks like there will
still be W or WSW through, say, noon. Not sure
I can get there early enough if the switch
is much sooner than that.

After much hemming and some hawing--it seems to me that the lower winds are going to be pretty southish. It also seems like there's some chance of lake-effect clouds/snow showers further north. More sun to the south. I'm back to thinking Daniel's (Taylor's would be a good choice too, perhaps). My truck can easily blast its way up the trail--got room for a couple of other gliders. Will confirm local winds aloft at 8:00 am

Although I still see occasional W and WSW on the AWS real-time
sites (Mercersburg, Hagerstown), the mostly-cloudy forecast and
low temps are tempting me to stay home today.

Can't do Dickies (no permit), and Daniels looks a bit light
for the Hangies.

So I think I'll save my cold-weather motivation for a sunnier day. :)

Flying Saturday?

Not as good as Daniels and Dickeys.? Got there around 9:45A.? Shawn Ray (sans glider) and Dave Bodner w/ glider were there.? Saw and heard some ravens playing out in front in some light lift.? Gave me some hope, so I set up quickly under a completely overcast sky.? Conditions on the ramp were mainly cross from the SW with a straight in cycle here and there.? Winds were light, max around 8 MPH.? Knew it was on the cusp of being soarable.? Launched around 10:30 in a straight cycle.? Briefly got above launch dolphin flying down the ridge.? Slowly sank and put down in the secondary.? A pilot with a lower sink rate (high-per or lighter wing loading) I feel would have gotten up slowly.? Missed the stronger window.? The stronger window was before sunrise :-(.? Timing is everything.

I got there around 9:30 . David Bodner was allready there hangin out.I am fighting off a damm cold. I chose not to fly this weekend....I went up to assist Bacil, and whomever else chose to fly....While Bacil was getting ready David and I hung out on the PG launch to see what improvments could be made.(MUCH BACKFILL)Any thoughts on the PG launch? David, and I then wired Bacil off, who had a perfect launch in a tiny bit of a cross(not to strong of wind),and a perfect landing in the secondary. After I retrieved him he bought me a brew at the bar.He then started talking about his past flights, theories, and "so there I was" kind of stories. I dig that stuff. I eat it up, and file it away. It's all good! I had fun. Peace, Shawn.
