Another possible exercise opportunity

Post by XCanytime »

Looking like there will be another opportunity for at least some good exercise at Woodstock on Sunday. Looking strong right now and not too cold, in the 30's. Sherpas welcome

High Rock

Post by Matthew »

How about High Rock on Monday? Does anyone know how deep the snow is in the fields around HR or Hagerstown. Also, is there a layer of ice on top of the snow like down here in DC? I wouldn't want to try to land in a foot of snow covered by an inch of ice.

If it's just snow at Smithsburg, might be fun to do some Kite-skiing there on Sunday.

A couple of thoughts on flying WS....There is 4-6 inches of snow here with a crust of ice on top that you can't break through in the cold of the mornings. By mid day it is warm enough to break through the ice on top (about every third step), but it is tough going. It will probably take four wheel drive to get to the back side of WS as most of the secondary roads are not cleared well. The back road up might be "hikeable" because it gets some sun but the top of the mountain could offer up a real challenge to just move. I can see cresting the mountain after hiking up with your glider and sliding down through the parking lot not making the first horeshoe turn to the right. The turns don't have much bank to them. It would be like a bobsled course without the banked turns.
I'd be up for a hike up but I think it will be one heck of a workout in the ice covered snow. It will also require a pair of crampons for your launch run or an hour or two of digging to clear a place to set up a glider and a path to get it to launch then a path for launching. Come on spring.

Gary,
Thanks for the heads up. I thought the freezing rain stayed east of the Blue Ridge. I'll wait for better ground conditions. Of course I remember from 3 years ago a post with the following: "Took about three minutes to kick steps into the crusty snow that would have worked for access to (launch)". No thanks.

ICE ICE ICE

Post by Matthew »

I talked to Eddie Miller. The whole Smithsburg Valley from High Rock as far as the eye can see is a sheet of glass. Anyone wanna go ice skating at Smithsburg? :)
