Post by RedBaron »

I think WS may be doable tomorrow afternoon. What do others think?

I'm in. Might have the ole VG line tuned to a high c note to keep from flying backwards. Probably a lat one for me.

There looks to be a couple hour window of possibility. Will check in the early AM the forecast and if the throttleback is still predicted around 3PM I'm going.

We will check 11:20am forecast update-- if gust factor is backed off, we are in.

Early AM check has verified the backoff by 3PM. I'll probably be at launch by 1PM.

Turned out quite nice for a rather cold clear crisp day. Basil launched about 3:30 and I soon followed. Gary and Nelson launch followed some time later by Yanni. Lift was everywhere. Gary and Nelson got to three grand over or maybe a little more. Everyone landed in the LZ.

Should have come out today.

Yesterday was again one of those days where the Woodstock Gradient Effect was present (again :D ). Like Joe said, it was cold, but worth it. Got there about 1:30P and found Janni in the parking lot. The conditions were moderately strong at that time from the sound of the cycles in the trees. Joe and Gary made it up the mountain a few minutes later and we took our time setting up. The majority of the time we were setting up the conditions were fine and easily launchable. A few strong ones did blow thru. Nelson was the last of the faithful to arrive. Once Joe went up the tower and measured 10 to 15 constant it was time to go. I launched and made sure I stayed out in front of the mountain. Figure 8ed in the abundant lift and found a 20 knot WNW headwind at times. Got to 1200' over pretty easily and boated around to the SW and NE until Joe launched and joined me. Didn't want to break down in the dark, so I went out to land of course with the LZ lifting off. Got it down OK with some cows as obstacles. Watched Gary, Joe, and Nelson sky out while I broke down. Joe flew out to Rt. 11, Nelson was chasing a pair of sailplanes to the north, and Gary was exploring down to the SW. Yanni got to fly his Falcon 225 at the end of the day when it really mellowed out and had a nice soaring flight. Nelson was last to land at sunset, and deemed it a very good day.

I sure had fun, couldn't believe that 15-20 knot wind turned into "Falcon air" as Bacil puts it by the end of the day. Nice smooth soaring in front of launch and a great view of the sun setting.

One of the nicest, smoothest, boatiest, and really pretty flights I ever had was the evening of a day that HOWLED through launch all day. I don't know what the air speed was, but an easy 40 knots. Too windy to even ground handle the glider.
