Weekend of 4/2 - 4/3

Weekend of 4/2 - 4/3
???? It has been a rough flying winter on a lot of pilots.? This is the least I have flown in 14 winter flying seasons.? This weekend doesn't look very good either.? However, I have a gut feeling that the weekend of 4/2 - 4/3 is going to be flyable both days, and XCable both days for the Region 9 XCers.? Initial indications are pointing to a possible N/SE (Sacramento/Jacks) pattern for Saturday/Sunday.? I know this is a long time out from now, and a lot can change, but X your fingers for a precip-free post-frontal day (WNW to N) Saturday 4/2 and a precip-free (E to S) day Sunday 4/3.

April 2nd
April 2nd is our one and only day in which we promote hang glding to the general public at the Kite Festival. The only person who has volunteered to help is Brian Vant Hull. Brian, BTW, helps at every kite festival, every clean-up, parachute clinic, hang gliding festival and has been a club officer almost every year. I haven't flown that much this year and I'm giving up a flying day for this once per year opportunity. Those of you who choose to fly that day, especially the ones who have been racking up airtime mid-week while the rest of us are working, and not help out make me sick.

Well... the tone may be a little harsh... but I think I understand how
Matthew feels.
Certainly, the Kite Festival is about the only imaginable venue where
literally 100's of people walk by hang gliders, and wonder what they
are all about. If you haven't helped out at one of these things, lemme
tell you, the stream of people and questions is nearly non-stop. It's a
great opportunity to spread good PR about HG and PG. If you have
any concerns about the dwindling number of pilots (fewer pilots means
more expensive gliders!!), it is at events like this where your efforts
can actually have an impact.
If you haven't volunteered for one of the festivals, please give it some
thought, and give Matthew a call.

(Matthew, I'll try to put in a few hours on April 2, will know for sure
in a couple days)

helping out
I would help--but its a long way to go, and I have assisted in the past. I think Brian VH does them all cause he's discovered these events are chick magnets.
In the past, the winds often would lift in nicely in front of the monument and most of the activities were there. Now that this area has become a fortress resembling pre-invasion Normandy, where is the event actually going to take place?

Great Googly-moo!
Weekend of 4/2 - 4/3
I would enjoy helping out at this event, and I may yet be able to do so, but my oldest daughter has a violin competition that weekend during which she will be playing 3 different pieces at 3 different times over the course of the weekend, and the schedule is not yet available to us of the times that she will be performing.? –Linda B.

Ummm...
I just want to point out that one of our most active site cleaner uppers is a weekday flyer. He's single handedly responsible for us not ever having to clear one particular site and has done quite a bit of work on other sites as well. I would mention his name, but I think he might get upset about getting named publicly. If you don't know, I'd be happy to tell you who he is privately.
I am pretty sure some of the other weekday flyers have been guilty of site maintenance as well.
I think these folks have done a lot to help the club and keep us flying, even if some don't like to help with any particular other task.
Please... be careful who you aim that flamethrower at.
That said, I've helped out at the kite festival in the past and it's always been a blast. You won't believe some of the contraptions that fly! And you'll hang out with some good buddies, get to talk hang gliding ALL the time all day long without eyes glazing over and some of the kite shows are really fun to watch. I especially fondly remember the synchronized kite flying. Try to do that on an hg!

Kite Fest
I'm not talking about the pilots who live a couple of hours away from the city. They're always cleaning up WS and other sites and have helped out wtih events in the WS area. I'm talking about the local DC area pilots. They know who they are. And we all know who they are.

Mr. Bad Attitude
I apologize for my bad attitude regarding the lack of support for the kite festival. Twisting arms to get help just gets old. And it seems to me that we've lost our sense of community. People actually used to be excited about the kite festival and have enthusiasm for club activities and not just flying. The Kite Festial is a lot of fun a a chance to share your love of hang gliding with the general public.
Please contact me at mcgraham20@hotmail.com if you want to share your love of hang gliding and have a great, fun day on the mall. And bring a kite... or a paraglider if you have one.

Weekend of 4/2 - 4/3
The Kite Festival really is a lot of fun. ?I took a photo album of hang gliding pictures with me last year for people to look thru.? Lots of people enjoyed looking through them.? ?I would like to participate but have a work commitment that day.

Re: Mr. Bad Attitude
Count me in to help out on April 2 Matthew. If you need more thanMatthew wrote: People actually used to be excited about the kite festival and have enthusiasm for club activities and not just flying. Matthew
an 'ambassador' (help with set up, tear down, etc), please give me
a call.
BTW: the Kite Festival is just a part of the larger Cherry Blossom festival.
Did you know, for example, that the big fireworks display is scheduled for
the very same day?
http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestiva ... y.php3?100
I'll be biking down to the festival from Rockville, and I hope to make
a day-long event out of it. If you haven't been to a Kite Fest .... Matthew
is right, it really is fun, and it's worth the sacrifice of one potentially good
spring flying day.

PS: For those needing more motivation... Marc F's chick-magnet comment
is dead-on.

Hi, Scott (all) -
The Festival runs from 10 - 4.
I'm sure Matthew could use you whenever you can be there. Please drop him a line if you two aren't already in contact.
Best of luck with Holly's surgery!

Holly and I would like to help out at the Kite Festival, and may be able to come later (how long does it last?). Holly is getting her eyes "Lasicked" (not a bad joke---I didn't mean it that way!) Friday afternoon, and I'll have to be her eyes and chauffer for a day or two afterwards.
