Florida Report

Post by Paul Tjaden »

Hi Guys,

Florida can be pretty oppressive during the summer and I find myself being envious of the flying reports I read while you guys are flying to the beach in the Mid-Atlantic and we're getting hot and humid with daily afternoon thunder showers, but then fall comes around and reminds me why I live here.

Today was gorgeous with a high around 80, low humidity and light winds. Oh yeah.....it was also brain dead soarable. I haven't flown my T2 for months while working on my sail plane rating, but today, I took it out of moth balls and flew till I was exhausted (which didn't take that long considering that my glider had somehow gotten a right turn in it, and I was totally out of flying shape after a summer of flying with just one hand and two feet.) Lauren also had a nice, long flight, landing only because she was tired.

I had another treat today, too. A Moyes Tempest has been delivered to Quest to be sold. For those of you who don't know, a Tempest is an ultra- light sail plane that Moyes and Bobby Bailey designed several years ago. It was never financially successful and they don't make them anymore, but, this one is really cherry and I got a chance to fly it today. It was getting late, and I was only able to get an extendo, but, it was a ball. I had heard some unflaterring things about it and I'm still not certain about its performance but I thought it flew sweet. The day ended with lots of pilots playing with the Tempest, April Mackin doing her first few solo flights in Bobby Bailey's Dragon Fly and Flavia taking tourists on discovery flights till the sun went down.........Just another day in paradise!

Almost forgot, Hugh M. Stayed with us a few days this week while he worked on a new rating. I'll let him tell you about that . As always, he was a perfect house guest and fun company.
