ICE - In Case of Emergency (please read)

Post by pink_albatross »

Hi y'all,

if you already know about ICE and have implemented it, skip this post.

Considering that engaging in our sport carries some risk with it, we might want to think about implementing ICE. ICE is a simple thing of entering in your in-case-of-emergency number under the acronym ICE. When a patient is not able to speak, emergency rooms across the country have traditionally been looking in wallets to find relatives or friends to contact. This has often proved to be unsuccessful.

Now they have started looking in the patient's cellphone for contacts. They will look under ICE first to locate the patient's emergency contact. This is obviously much more effective and possibly more desirable, than having them contact wife/husband/mom/dad/home. Besides you may not want your mom to know that you're half dead in the hospital. At least not right away.

You will probably hear from your physician about this sooner or later. Why don't you just stick ICE in your cellphone *now* and then hope nobody will ever have to use it.

p.s. read about it in NYtimes 24, october, health section by Eric Nagourney
p.p.s. considering that most of us have to battle DC traffic on a regular basis, you may want to implement ICE even if you're a super-safe pilot :-P You may even want to tell your non-pilot friends about it.

An ICE #in your cell is a good idea. Unfortunately I think most of us pack our cell phone away along with our wallets, etc in our harness, so the odds are your cell will be no more use than your wallet. Most auto racing organizations require you to put a label on your helmet with name, date of birth, blood type, and drug allergies. My racer buddies used to do this with a regular label maker. We should do the same, and add contact info. Rescuers will see the info and hopefully transport the helmet along with you to the hospital. Probably not a bad idea to laminate the info and stick it in a clothing pocket as well. I *should* do this.

I've had ICE in my cell phone for the past 2 or 3 years. The only issue is the firemen couldn't get to my cell while I was up in the tree :D

Rich Donohue thought about this years ago, and thought it would be a good idea to put the information on pin-on name labels: those plastic things a card slips into. The twist: to avoid leaving your information out in the open, it would be on a fold over card, taped in place with with a length of dental floss to break the tape and remove the card.

He realized nobody would listen to him, no matter how good the idea, so he only told it to me. I said I'd do something with it, but never did. His idea (he's actually full of good ideas, if you have the patience to listen) is that the club supply the materials and at a meeting we all make one of these. you can put 'ICE' and your name on the outside of the fold-over card.

I still think it's a good idea.
