VX-150
HIGH-SPEC 5-WATT 144 MHZ HANDHELD

Compact yet incredibly rugged, the VX-150 2-meter handheld is derived from our Vertex commercial transceiver line, providing exceptional receiver performance along with clean, clear transmit audio. Built to withstand the rigors of outdoor use, the 16-key VX-150 is constructed inside a die-cast aluminum housing, with a large, high-output speaker delivering commercial-grade audio. And the illuminated keypad provides easy viewing during nighttime operation. You need a radio that's as tough as your operating environment; compare the features of the VX-150 to other handhelds, and you’ll see that there is no comparison!

Direct Keypad Frequency Entry
The VX-150 includes a 16-key keypad, providing both direct frequency entry and fingertip DTMF control on transmission. And a 9-memory DTMF autodialer allows simple access to autopatches or Internet Linking nodes such as the Yaesu WIRES-II system.
5 Watts Power Output
The VX-150 puts out a maximum of 5 Watts of clean power, with selectable power-saving choices of 2 Watts and ½ Watt also being available with the touch of a front panel key.
209 Memories
The versatile memory system of the VX-150 includes a total of 209 channels that can store frequency, CTCSS/DCS information, repeater shift, and a 7-character alpha-numeric label to aid in channel recognition.
Wide/Narrow Deviation Selection
For operation in narrow-band channel situation, the VX-150 includes both Wide and Narrow deviation selection capability, to ensure compatibility with local operating requirements.
Ultra-Rugged Construction

Hi all. I'm a pilot and ham in the making, neither yet. Saw one of these radio's on ebay two days ago that had been modified to allow tx on the same freq's as it would rx. Is that of value to a HG pilot and why or why not?

Transmission on the same frequency as Reception? If I'm interpreting you correctly that's normal. Or do 'tx' and 'rx' mean something else...far deeper and less obvious?

Rusty,

Welcome to the community. The up-side to modified radios is that they allow you to xmit on the USHGA freqs. The downside is that it is now a modified radio and technically not legal at all, not even in the ham band. Is there much chance of getting caught? probably not, but the fine is in the thousands of dollars (ouch). We have harrassed most local pilots into getting their ham ticket so virtually no one uses the ushga freqs anymore.

I think what he means is that the radio receives many channels that it is not set up to transmit on. (ie the weather and ushga business frequencies.)
The main problem ,other than a botched "fix" to allow transmission, is that the antennae is not tuned for the other frequencies and may not have any transmission range or cause overload in the radio....
I would not buy a radio that has been fixed.

Besides you can get the VX-150 for $117!!!! that can not be beat and you can grind this radio into the ground many times and it still works.
