Rusty,
Welcome to the community. The up-side to modified radios is that they allow you to xmit on the USHGA freqs. The downside is that it is now a modified radio and technically not legal at all, not even in the ham band. Is there much chance of getting caught? probably not, but the fine is in the thousands of dollars (ouch). We have harrassed most local pilots into getting their ham ticket so virtually no one uses the ushga freqs anymore.

Dave Proctor

I think what he means is that the radio receives many channels that it is not set up to transmit on. (ie the weather and ushga business frequencies.)
The main problem ,other than a botched "fix" to allow transmission, is that the antennae is not tuned for the other frequencies and may not have any transmission range or cause overload in the radio....
I would not buy a radio that has been fixed.
Besides you can get the VX-150 for $117!!!! that can not be beat and you can grind this radio into the ground many times and it still works.
