Real good day for most. Several XCs. I had an OK flight followed by an embarassing landing (which way was the wind blowing?). Thought I was done for the day, but Matthew and Carlos twisted my arm to fly again. That usually does the trick for me. I had a much nicer flight with a much less embarassing landing. Nice to end the day on a positive note.

Great day at the Pulpit. Heading into the Hagerstown valley I could see a line of wave clouds and puffy cumies heading east on the horizon. Always a good sign! Got to launch just after 10A, and it was way soarable and strong. Old time hang glider pilot Gary Devan showed up and assisted with setting up the glider. Thanks Gary. Entertained a gaggle of spectators while waiting for 3 pilots to show up. Cragin Shelton, Gary Smith, and Dave Proctor all arrived by 11A+, and helped me launch into straight-in conditions 12 to 18 MPH. Easily got up and spent the first hour close to cloudbase at around 1300' over (still no altimeter). Could have gone OTB but I wanted to fly with some pilots, so I hung around. Saw the helicopter taking people for rides at the fairgrounds in McConnellsburg. Dave Proctor launched, and we found ourselves scratching in a flush cycle, and with the added task of seeing the helicopter hanging around Rt. 16. Glad he decided not to take a closer look at us. Finally the helo flew back into the valley following the gas line clear-cut away from the ridge. Shawn Ray joined us, and the flush was still around. It affected me the worst by putting me below the ridge after an ill-fated run back by launch. Was one pothole away from turning out to land, but dolphin flew down to Rt. 16 and benched my way back up over the ridge down by Rt. 16. By this time Dave had already caught something down by 16, and was drifting OTB. Shawn and I slowly worked our way back up. I found some lift by launch, and drifted with it OTB. Made it to over the school at Lemar Road and set up to land behind it. Some lift was popping off in the area, so I tried for a low save, but after 10 minutes of up and down, I gave up and landed in a crosswind. Brian Vant-Hull just happened by, and retrieved me. Thanks Brian. Back at launch it was still soarable, and many other pilots had flown or were getting ready to fly. Contacted Dave on the radio, and he had made it to about a half-mile from the High Rock LZ. Went to retrieve Dave, and found Carlos and Matthew breaking down on Lemar Road near Lemasters. Retrieved Dave, and back at launch Gary Smith was soaring his Zagi, and Matthew was soaring his paraglider. Dave, Bruce Engen, Dan, Gary, I stopped at the Antrim House in Greencastle to fuel up after a very active day at the Pulpit. Good to see a lot of pilots at the Pulpit.

It was a good day at the Pulpit. After last weeks poor turnout I was glad to see so many pilots there to take advantage of conditions. Bacil launched early in strongish but not stupid conditions. He thrashed around on the ridge most of the time, occasionally getting to what looked like 1.5K over. I finished setting up and was second off about 45 minutes behind Bacil, probably around 12:30. It was ridge soarable and I mucked around on the ridge trying to get high enough to bail. After about half an hour I found something and drifted with it, slowly climbing to around 4K MSL. I normally wouldn't leave this low, but it was quite clowded over in the Mcconnellsburg valley and more sunny in the Cumberland valley. I had faith that I could find something in the sun. Being this low I worked every scrap of lift as I slowly scraped my way across the valley. I was climbing good over Lemar road and watched Bacil come in low over the school and land behind it. I was bounding between 3&4K as I worked towards Rte 81. Got low on the other side of 81 and had unzipped as I had been gliding thru major sink when I found the strongest thermal of the day at around 1800 MSL (maybe lower, I was kinda busy). Immediately zipped back up and climbed back to around 3500 MSL. Worked my way up against the Michaux tree hazard. This week the drift was good for a crossing, problem is I hadn't gotten above 4.5K MSL in the entire flight as thermals were quite snakey. Any given climb required many major searches to re-acquire the lift, and the lift really dropped off above 4K. I was up against the Michaux on the North side of Waynesboro. I started heading South and landed about 2 miles SE of Waynesboro, around 2:30 PM. Don't know the mileage. Bacil came and picked me up (thanks Bacil). Had an OK dinner at Antrim House in Greencastle with Bacil, Gary Smith, Bruce Engen, and Dan Tomlinson. This makes two trips across the valley in a week, and three flights in a row at the Pulpit. It is rare when the Pulpit is the place to be. I don't think I have ever had three flights in a row there. It was good to see oldtime pilot Gary Devan come out. Thanks for all the launch help Gary! Other pilots in attendance ( I will definitely miss some as I launched before most got there): Cragin, Shawn, Gary, Bruce, Bacil, Matt, Karen, Shawn, Carlos, Dan, Dave B.

I arrived at the Pulpit around 11:30 to see Bacil shreading it up.I got myself set up and launched after Dave P. Thanks to Matthew, Gary S. and Joe B. for helping me get off safely. I tried the old ramp first ,but it was crossing from the S.I then moved over to the new ramp , but there were no streamers on the end of the ramp. Karen was nice enough to go get some. Thanks Karen and Joe for putting them up. I launched off and flew with Dave and Bacil for a while then Dave disappeared. Bacil and I got down to the deck and fought the good fight and then got back up.We pumped our fists at each other as we passed. We were stoked! I flew for an hour 10 mins got to a grand over and headed out because my shoulders were shreaded from overhead welding and hammer drilling at work. Got over the LZ and had to work to get down. I landed on my feet, but dropped down to a knee. It was bumpy coming in.Rich B. called me while I was flying, but I had my hands full, so I called him when I landed. Rich gave me, Dave B. Joe B. and Cragin rides back up. Thanks Rich!! I then rode along with Rich over to Kirshner's to check out his new wing. A Northwing Illusion 10M.Nice wing man.....John Middleton had a class going as well.Fort Littleton had their 250th anniversary there. I met Paul A. who flies at Ridgely alond with his son Brian who was taking lessons from John. Brian lives in Waynesboro. He skydives! Muskets going off , ax throwing, food and many questions from wuffo's about what they were watching. Got back to launch around dark to see Glen and Janni. They both had great flights. They had then told me they were both 3's now. Good for you guys!
The colors yesterday was TITS! THE COLORS MAN, THE COLORS!....... Couldn't ask for better scenery!
Great day!
I was thinking on my way home driving by myself.
You know, that's a pretty amazing thing we are able to do!!!!!!!!
Good day all around!
I had fun!
Peace, Shawn.

Pulpit Sat'day
Spectacular day. We blew off sailing and the Flugtag and it was well worth it. Colors were at their peak. Flew my HG first got 3K over launch and bailed over the ridge only to have all of the clouds shred downwind Bubbled along at 1K over launch for a few miles and saw a glider on the ground. The only cloud forming looked too far away. So I corkscrewed down 2000+' and landed with Carlos for a 1:15 flight. Gary Devan came and picked us up.
BIG, BIG THANKS TO GARY FOR PICKING US UP AND SPENDING THE DAY HELPING EVERYONE LAUNCH!!!!
Got back to launch to find Karen and Brian VH in the air. Grabbed the PG and got off at a 4:30, followed shortly by Dave Bodner for his second flight of the day in his Falcon. It wasn't quite magic. But there was some ridge lift and thermals still good enough to get 1300 over launch. Everyone landed and as the winds backed off and I spent the last 20 minutes alone on the ridge scratching between launch level and 300 over. Gary Smith was flying his Zagi and I saw it climbing. So I tried to thermal with the Zagi and almost kicked it out of the sky. Ooops! Gary dove it out of the way just in time. Won't try that again.
Anyway, I wish we had more days like that. Everyone flew, everyone soared, everyone left with a smile on their face.

Launched at 1:05 after waiting ten minutes for the strong winds to cycle down. They didn't, but it was smooth and even, so I should have launched as soon as I was on the new ramp. Thanks and apologies to my wire crew for making them stand in that wind for so long. Good clean launch, straight out and then up.
Milked it at 200 over down the ridge, then caught a nice one and topped out at 1600' over. After that one good ride, lots of time at 300 - 600 over. Slowly stairstepped out and down to the LZ (would have preferred to stay up), landing at 2:00 for a 55 minute flight. Late on the flare, so a safe belly scrub landing.
Joined Shawn and Daviid B. in the breakdown area, and appreciated the ride back up to the top by Rich Bloomfiled.

Good dinner with fun beer selection and mediocre service at the brew pub by Target in Frederick. Thanks to all who helped with launch, retrieve, dinner suggestion, etc.
Yes, I did have a smile for the day.

Ridgely?
Heard there was some good aviation commited by PGs at Dickey's on Saturday and HG and PG soaring flights at Daniel's on Sunday. How'd it go at Ridgely this weekend? Anyone make it to the beach on Saturday?

it was a very enjoyable day for me also,
catching the vibe of everyones exitement about the day,
watching them 'buzz' when they came back to launch after flying.
everyone made me 'feel to home'. thanks
talked with mathew before his hg flight, after it , and helped with his paraglider launch.
i heard the most pleasure in his voice when we got back to launch
and he discovered that karen had launched and was in the air.
that was cool.
