Speed Flying

Post by Marcel Dettling »

Speed Flying: That's the big new trend here! Check out the videos on http://www.acro-base.com/fr/galerie/video/video.htm, especially the one on top (EIGER camera embarquee).

What is it about: two guys are riding/flying down from Eiger. Their wings have a size of 8 square meters (about a third of a PG, about half of a HG), airspeed is around 100kph/65mph, sink rate is over 2000fpm and the L/D is adjustable with trimmers from 1.5 to 3 (so that you can stay close to the terrain).

So they make the descent from Eiger via the West and North Face in just a bit over two minutes. Remember that it's almost 6000 vertical feet from top to bottom.

Absolutely awesome, but of course also friggin dangerous. But (almost) everybody is hip about it here...

Cheers,

Marcel
