Hot air balloon festival this weekend

Post by garys »

Just wanted to get the word out for the annual hot air balloon festival at Long Branch estate this weekend. (Just east of Winchester Va. on route 50) Great photo ops. and a good place for you to drop off your non flying significant other for the day then pick them up all happy after they have been crawling around in the wine tasting tent and you have had a three hour flight at WS.
Here is a link for details. http://www.historiclongbranch.com/balloonfest/index.htm
I will be there Fri. eve and Sat morning early before heading out to fly HG somewhere.

Gary,
Hope to see you at Woodstock Saturday morning. Looking pretty good so far. Right now it's looking like more wind in the AM versus the PM, but Woodstock is so steep that there should be enough wind most of the day for ridge lift.

WS this Fri. afternoon then Dickey ridge Sat.

I think it might be a bit light for Saturday and SW ??? so I am thinking Dickey ridge. Chiggers and ticks have got to be wiped out by the couple of frosts we have had. This Friday afternoon is looking great for WS though. Hope to bail out of work for 1/2 day and take advantage of the nice NW conditions. Will check in again tomorrow eve. for conditions and timing.

I'm thinking friday may be the last Woodstock chance before the leaves drop. I have an evening meeting, but might fly early afternoon.

Saturday-- choice of Pulpit, Ridgley or Dickey's. Too light for WS.

Sunday-- Daniel's.

Bay forecast for Saturday is NW 10 to 15 knots. I believe that there will be some blow left over Saturday AM into early PM. Don't dismiss Woodstock as too light with forecasts like that. Seen it be soarable there as well as at the Pulpit with the same forecast. But I'm up for the Pulpit too.

Matthew,
That has nothing to do with the subject at hand. I believe that there will be enough wind left over Saturday morning at Woodstock for ridge soaring a good bit of the day. The paraglider pilots should be loving Woodstock all day. Problem is the timing for hang glider pilots. Would have to get up with the birds to get the best part, and who would want to do that? The airmass isn't lowering the temperature all that much, so the big blow could be over by noontime. However, the Pulpit should be soarable all day long, albeit strong until midafternoon. I sure hope that more than just 3 pilots show up at the Pulpit Saturday, because it's looking bulletproof all day.
