Well, we didn't have many people, but we did have 3 paraglider pilots and welcomed them with open arms. The new pilot Tamas showed up with Laszlo and the guy whose name I can't remember because it's American and therefore won't stick in my brain. But they trimmed the PG launch and Tamas spent a good deal of time down in the trenches cutting brush with me, Rich Bloomfield, Mike Lee, and Dave Bodner. Matt and Karen also worked to spiff up the PG launch area.
I know getting the brush cleared is not an urgent issue, but it has to be done every 5 years or so. We still haven't gotten to the original cut line to the right, and the lower left corner hasn't met the cut line either. Chain saws would be nice.
Glen and Dan showed up later after appointments during the day, and Glen and Mike got their first Pulpit launches. Mike launched earlier and soared at ridge level for 10-15 minutes. I managed to get above ridge level for about 5 miutes, then fought below for a bit before sinking out. Dave faired slightly worse. It had died by the time Glen launched, but he got in a low wind ramp launch and did great.
The PGers all soared to thousands of feet, and nothing I can say will fix the problem, so I just have to congratulate them, I guess.
Bridget the bar owner was playing hard to get, so we could never discuss the static display. Save it for later, I think. We did drop off several huge chunks of literature.

Pulpit Work Party
Brian,
You told me that you were going to chastise everyone about not showing up at the work party so I wouldn't have to be the bad guy again. That post wasn't mean at all.
So here goes...
Unless you had a very important previous commitment or helped out at the previous Pulpit work party or have volunteered to do some clean-up on your own, you are all a bunch of lazy bums. Jeesh!!!! How hard is it to show some support for your club and your flying sites? What? You can go fly somewhere else. But you can't come out and put in 90 minutes of work to clear out launch and make flying safer... especially when you can fly afterwards. And what happened to the folks who said they were going to come out and didn't show? The flying community is no longer a community and the club is going to Hell in a handbasket.
Ugh!
Matthew
PS Thanks to everyone who did come out and help at the Pulpit work parties, the High Rock work party and the Bill's Hill Clean-Up. You guys, and the only woman (Karen), understand the importance of our mountain sites. The rest of you so-called mountain pilots are bums!!!!

I just don't have the magic Matthew touch, I guess. Still basking in the glow of a good HR work party or something. Hard to get upset after that one.
Actually I was waiting to see if anyone was brazen enough to post a flight report so I could really fly off the handle. No reports, so assuming folks weren't towing, where were they? Other types of business are okay for one weekend, but twice in row? I remember when we used to get 20 people out to a work party, and this time if you add it up across 2 weeks I count maybe a dozen.
Aw well, a lot of people who were missing have done loads of work in the past, and we've been having great support from the newer pilots. I don't think we're going H in an H quite yet. I'm one of 'em starry eyed optimistic types. We will always have work to be done in the future, so please dedicate yourself to getting some done next time so Matthew won't have to knock heads. The mountains need ya.

I've been to a lot of work parties.... My observation: 90% of work parties
for which the date is not announced a LONG time in advance have relatively
low turnouts.
If we know that we're going to do some combination of Fisher/Bills/Pulpit
prior to the Fly-In... Then select a date and start the guilt trips two months
prior. Rain or shine. Regardless of wind direction. Line up the
chain saws by actually calling people.
And it wouldn't hurt to have the club provide some refreshments and beer
(that's a task which is really easy to volunteer for BTW). Make it an event!
A lot of people's schedules are way busier than they used to be. We can't
just toss out a date and expect a huge turnout.
My $0.02 , your mileage may vary!

That's a good observation, Mark. Though the work party a couple weeks ago was planned at the meeting far enough in advance, there was no drum beating leading up to it. And this weekend there was only a two day warning. A good work party has to be planned as a major event...we have to keep that in mind for the future.
I have little doubt that there was schedule conflicts all around, hence my first mild post.

much too rational and accurate.
where's the guilt-tripping?

anybody planning/able to show up early, say mid-day, on friday to do more work on the slot or whatever other maintenance?
mathew said that my visiting the 9/11 shanksville site, this past weekend, with my elderly parents, was not a valid excuse and stated that he didn't believe it possible that i ever Had a mother .
