posts not getting transmitted as e-mail

Post by mcelrah »

I am an e-mail subscriber, but at least since the recent forum hiccup, I am aware that I am not receiving all messages that get posted on the web-based version of the forums. - Hugh

Do you have an AOL email account Hugh? I know that there
are some issues with that provider.

Have you double-checked that you are email-subscribed to
all the forums that you want to be? (login to the forum
web-site, click on the 'Forum subscriptions'" icon)

I enabled email deliver for the HG forum, replied on today's
High Rock topic, and it was delivered seconds later...

OK, Mark, I'm putting up with the webforum format for the time being, but I'm not liking it. Just in case you are thinking those of us who prefer e-mail are going to be converted... Please re-enable e-mail! Thanks - Hugh

It's not that easy Hugh. And I don't sit around on my hands,
waiting for people to change their minds about something.

The Mail-2-Forum phpBB add-on that provides the web/email
gateway has had security issues that have caused at least
several websites to be trashed by hackers.

In addition, the chatter at the support site for the add-on
indicates that the project is down to a single (volunteer,
OpenSource) developer. So the health of the product is
questionable.

Bottom line.... I'm still debating the pros and cons of re-installing
the package. Particularly given what a pain in the a@@ the
rebuild of the site turned out to be.

Didn't mean to sound pissed off - or to piss you off. I recognize that this is volunteer work for you, like all flying club activities. Was the crash caused by malicious activity? What's the difference if the system sends me an e-mail telling me that I have a reply or if it sends me the actual reply?

While I'm bugging you, could there be a forum for "other aviation activity"? I would like to report my triking activities to interested club members, but keep the HG and PG fora unpolluted by posts about powered flight. It's neither "ground-bound fun" nor "political rants" and the FiFis won't have me...

Yeah, sorry, I know.... I'm just a grouch because there's a lot
to do lately

Our late July crash was due to a failure at our web hosting provider.
I don't know if it was solely hardware related, or if they themselves
were hacked. They didn't provide any information at all, just "Sorry,
we've recreated your account, now you can rebuild your website from
scratch". So we politely left and rebuilt elsewhere.

Not sure what you're asking here Hugh... The phpBB-based
email/web gateway security issues don't have anything to do
with the way in which forum content is delivered by email. They
have to do
with hackers being able to exploit weaknesses in the gateway
software, allowing them to (say) trash all your HTML files, or
corrupt your database.

That's a neat idea, I'll look into this after the Fly-In.

Cheers,
