New Owners at Mountain House Bar (Pulpit)
After deciding the Pulpit was no longer flyable, we trooped into the bar on Monday night to eat, drink, and shoot pool. One of the owners (Bridget, slender, auburn hair, energetic) deduced we were hang glider pilots and came running over to talk. Turns out ever since they bought the bar in December people have been peppering them with questions about hang gliding, and they had no answers. It was driving them crazy.
Here's the good part: they consider our presence to be a major asset, and are eager to have literature to pass out. I gave her a handful of the "learn to fly" pamphlets, but she wants a whole box. I also plan to write a pulpit specific handout to get to them this weekend (we've got alot more work to do on the cleanup, remember?), though I'm sure the first version will evolve and improve.
She was excited to hear about the Pulpit fly-in and would like to interface with us, putting up posters, etc. Maybe ressurect the static display, but at the bar instead of at Johnnies? She wants to advertise us. It was a bit of a let down for her to discover that we could never guaruntee flying on any particular day, but we can leave some fly-in handouts and a wuffo coversheet.
Anyway, having this kind of support from the bar is a dream come true. The former owners sucked...in fact they were so jealous of how well the new owners were doing that they called in complaints about the noise from the band and shut down the sunday afternoon bands we used to enjoy.
The new owners are strongly HG/PG friendly and deserve our support.
What we can do for them:
* provide hang gliding literature as described above.
* They'd love a poster sized picture of launching from the pulpit. We could add our website etc.
* perhaps we could find out who's in charge of the noise enforcement and apply pressure by letter writing, petitions, etc. There was no complaints for years, nobody's around, this was clearly an unjust action. Having the outdoor bands was just plain cool.
*And most imprtantly, go in, drink, shoot pool, chat everyone up. I didn't bring up use the dumpster yet, not until we've proved our benefit to them. Mike did slyly bring up the subject of WiFi, though she says they get alot of interference from the nearby antennaes. But if we keep leaving hints it may happen since they have a wifi hub in the upstairs meeting room.
Anyway, that's just a public announcement that we have a golden opportunity here. The board needs to talk about specifics, and we can discuss more at the upcoming meeting (there is an upcoming meeting, right?).
Who has the box of "Learn to Fly" pamphlets? I'd like to bring her a couple hundred this weekend.

I can probably come up with a decent poster. I'll look in to printing costs at Kinko's.
I believe Matthew has the majority of the hand outs, from the last event.

Anybody got a junk glider we could give them as a permanent static display? Let's turn this into a hang/paraglider/motorcycle bar! Is there a stash of old USHGA mags to leave there? I'll contribute a John Heiney poster... Would they like some crushed/dented helmets to display? (OK, so maybe I'm trying to compete with the biker mystique - not the image we want to project.) Now, can we get them to include yuppie food on the menu? Melted brie with fig tapenade? Chilean wine? - Hugh
still got that poster of an old-timey single surface colorful ww glider/pilot.
got any shots, from the air, that include gliders in the sky, the launch and the bar?
would be interested in buying a copy of any poster that would be put together - help to defray costs.
copies to be available for sale at the bar - along with t-shirts - calendars -tandem literature? marco in a dunking booth - Whoops! got carried away

Any poster that I print would be a one-off, and would cost about $100 a copy, regardless of how many copies I get printed; additional copies don't actually help to "defray the cost". (sorry)
Actual cost: 24"x36" would be $90; 36"x48" would be $130; note: 24"x36" is a 3:2 aspect ratio, same as a 4x6 print; the other poster is 4:3, similar to a computer or TV screen, or equivalent to 10x7.5 (the same aspect that I use for calendars). If I did that with a 36" poster, it would be 36"x27", which (if they can print that, which I think they can) would probably run around $105. That would be the better way to go for a vertical poster; for a horizontal poster I would stick with the narrower format, which will tend to look a little more "panoramic".

Ralph -
I don't know where you're getting your prices, but I can get 1600x1200 resolution poster sizes printed on Kodak paper for close to 1/4 of that.
16"x20" - $17.99
20"x30" - $22.99
You can purchase poster frames for that size at any Art Store (i.e. Michaels, etc) for probably $10.00. I've got a 20x30 print over my fireplace that looks awesome.
Chris
P.S. Update the Roster!

Chris - that would be great!
Can you have your people talk to Ralph's people and maybe have one ready by the Pulpit party? I can't really speak for the board, but I'm sure nobody would object to that kind of pocket change. Or it can covered by a single pass of the hat.
It would be so cool to sit at the bar and look at one of Ralph's shots (or maybe down the line several shots) of a Pulpit launch. Or an Ellis shot.
Having our whole cavalcade troop over to the bar saturday night to present the poster would make a great impression. We'll have dumpster access in no time. (Still use Johnie's this time around so the bar doesn't feel taken advantage of).
I'll be in New York wednesday through friday, or I'd volunteer to handle the framing.

Can they be made to fit? Do you or does anyone else know how to do a frame job? It would be great if we can do all of this in house. Paying someone to do it can get expensive.deveil wrote:i'v got a bunch of frames.
20x30 does seem a little small for a bar. Can the photo paper be printed in bigger sizes?
I'm thinking we could pay for a large poster out of the Pulpit treasury. I for one would vote for the cost for a large framed poster, then people could perhaps donate the smaller photo type posters if they felt like it.

Call me or go to http://www.kodakgallery.com/Welcome.jsp I'm assuming that you are already a member, if not this is the best place to have digital photography done with almost immediate turnaround. Perfect resolution and good service. I have ALL of my artwork done by them. The picture above my fireplace looks awesome!

Although 20x30 isn't wall size .... I don't know if a bar/establishment wants their entire wall covered with a lifesize image of the Pulpit Ramp. For the price, you can have a few pictures printed and framed!

I honestly don't think they'd be adverse to a large HG poster. But it might be best to start small and ramp up if they react well. If they get free WiFi for us the sky's the limit as far as I'm concerned.
If Gary really wants to get rid of his non-pulpit HG poster, we could throw that in as a bonus.

Ya'll might have a distorted vision of how big posters are...
I have a 20/30 print... that's no small picture.
Standard poster size is 24 x 36
http://www.perfectposters.com/
30 x 40 31.25
http://www.snapfish.co.uk/helpposters
30"x20" 16.99
Hell, get a couple.
Anything on the wall's going to be a conversation piece.
Get them something good for now... worry about perfect later.
Jim
For now:
A hang glider launching off the ramp.
For later:
Get a wingmount shot with the bar in the background ;)

Oh, Matts aren't necessary IMHO.
Esp for shots of hang gliders in bars.
Anyway, Matts are easy to make with a straightedge and mattboard. Beveled cuts require a special bladeholder (I have one somewhere) and a special straightedge... and aren't worth the effort. Stock matts over at Walmart or whatever will do just fine.
