I think it's "Woodstock gradient effect". Woodstock generally has
less wind than the forecast for that area, while the Pulpit generally
has more. - Hugh

WGE
Having never been there and based solely on what little I have read/ heard, am I right in thinking it is just lighter winds than forecasted at Woodstock/ higher winds at Pulpit? Or is it actually a gradient and the winds are the same once away from the ground.
Either way I am looking forward to going to a new site.

new H2's to woodstock
Glad to see people are thinking about woodstock. I'll be bringing the same guys who I took to Jack's but didn't get a chance to fly. I think the combination of the WSGE and thermal damping from rain and cloud cover will make for a good opportunity for a first mountain launch, but I wanted them to see a few launches and especially landing approaches before they go later in the day. Hope the west cross won't be a turbulence issue.

In reply to the two last questions:
1. We think the higher ridge in front of woodstock blocks the wind lower down, so it does happen that you launch, climb up, and find wind increasing rapidly with height. We think the Pulpit is stronger because it's in a bit of a bowl of the ridge and there's a funnelling effect. But it's nearly always either + or - 5 mph depending on which site you go to. Except for the fact that High Rock is usually pretty close to the prediction it might be that the various forecast offices for the regions just suck in different directions.
2. Woodstock in an unwaivered site, but I believe you have to be a USHGA member. Jack's doesn't even require that much.

WS Sunday
We're going skiing at Massanutten in Harrisonburg on Sunday, probably finish up around 3 to 3:30pm. So we'll swing by WS around 4:00pm and see if anyone needs a ride back up to the top. We'll bring the PGs on the off chance it really backs off. Maybe throw in the HG harnesses too.
If anyone else wants to go Superbowl Skiing at Massanutten Sunday morning, give me a shout at
mcgraham20@hotmail.com
We went last year during a warm spell and the slopes were somehow in fantastic shape.

Ski
I flew over the Massanutten ski area today. Looked nice and pretty white those slopes. I also flew over dickies and landed finally at Dulles as I was coming back from cloudy SLC.
Isn't skiing in the weekend to crowdy overhere?
Cheers.

Skiing Sunday
Tom,
Sunday isn't just any weekend day. It's Superbowl Sunday. The masses will be at home for parties, pre-game parties and sitting around all day in front of the TV.

Flying to Brett & Sonja's ?
If conditions are reasonable, i'm thinking about an attempt at flying north off the end of the range to crash my friends Superbowl party. The Haynes will have cold beer, good eats and a warm house and can lend us a car for the ride back. Or, maybe even give us a ride. With the west cross it should be an easy glide to their place from 1500' over Massanutten peak. I will be checking weather in the morning before I commit. I am heading to my folks in Southern Md. to visit them for the eve. so I will be out of touch except via. cell phone. I do plan to head directly from the Bay to WS with glider. Possible ETA is 1:00 at the earliest. Any takers for the XC?

not ready for woodstock
although I am free to roam this weekend, I'm not sure I should fly woodstock until I have a more established feel for the slower roll response on the glider, in combination with needing more time with the longer landing setup. - Linda
H2 syndrome
So a few minutes after 6 am Glen calls. Turns out he'd been watching TV and had seen forecasts of 20-30 mph in Baltimore. I heard Yanni's voice in the background. That meant he had left his girlfriend no later than 5:30 am in order to join glen. Holy crap. I told them I'd check out the weather and get back to them. Didn't see quite the high winds Glen did, but didn't like the cross. Told them the chances were slim, but if they had enough enthusiasm to drive 3+ hours for a total crap shoot I could meet them. Besides, Glen has my wind sock. They'll be there bright and early. Hope they know how to entertain themselves.

Ashley the forecast is WSW 20-30.? Odds are it will be blown out even for the experts.? If it does become flyable it will probably be after 4:00 PM.?
I'm south of Manassas and in a location that I've found often correlates well with conditions at Woodstock.? Right now the winds are almost calm.? My guess is things are going to change in a real hurry.? Don't get sucker punched early.
