HG on Satellite

Post by CraginS »

Cool!
I webbed to maps.google.com
surfed out to Milpitas CA
Put it in Hybrid View,
and found Ed Levin County Park
There's a hang glider parked at the low launch,
where I flew the day before Thanksgiving, two years ago.
Easy to find, because it is just below the overlay text "Ed Levin County Park" on maximum zoom.

Yup.. That is the right spot. Put the view to Hybrid so you see map features overlaying the satellite photography.
Scroll the map over to just NW of the Spring Valley Golf Course.
Spot Sandy Wool Lake, just beside Levin Park Access Road.
Look due north of the lake for the overlay text
Ed Levin
County Park

The parking lot for launch area with HG visible is the light colored triangle just below that park text. That parking area is actually behind launch, which faces W to WSW. You launch aimed almost at the white water tank visible due wast of launch. LZ is in the field SW of that water tank, with the obvious road running SE to NW along the south edge of the LZ field.

Ok, got it.... was a bit further north than I was expecting... those directions helped a lot.

Now the fun part... Google Earth uses the same maps :)
Load it up and tilt the map (with terrain features on). Gives you a much better idea of what the place is like.

If you can't find the place, I have a KMZ file I can email. I have no idea how to post a pic or file to this forum otherwise I'd do that.

Cheers,
Jim

Jim,
We can't create binary attachments in this forum, and to embed images in a message, the images would first need to be posted to a web site somewhere (not webshots). One way to share google earth stuff here is to could create a KML file (human readable) and paste it into the message : )
