I think that what Rich was referring to was that HR did have a wooden
launch deck at one time; but it was burned down by some of HR's
non-flying "visitors". It was then replaced with the concrete deck
that we have today.
I'm not sure - this would have been way before my time; do I have my
[ancient] history correct here?

LMAO? Would it be sufficient if the frame were metal (like on the
ramps at Pulpit) and the decking were wood? Have to get Washington
County to permit it... - Hugh

Ancient History?
Ancient history? I'm now feeling old LOL.
The previous wooden ramp was torched on 4th of July (some ancient years ago.) The county allowed us to "landscape" another ramp so that it could not be torched again. The entire plan and authorization took almost 6 months. After the first round of concrete was poured, complete with reinforcing rebar, the county was unhappy with the "construction" and made us remove the rebar. They were emphatic about using rocks to do landscaping and to not have a constructed structure. We manually chiseled and pounded the concrete to remove the rebar. Rocks were retrieve from the woods and filled into the area. We took pictures of the rocks and then put on a ?thin? layer of ?material? to help hold the rocks together LOL. New concrete was poured, actually in 5 gallon buckets that were manually carrier up to the cube from the set-up area. I have a DVD that Fred Permenter from old VHS tapes showing much of the ordeal. It was a lot of work both political (with the county) and manual.

Right on; Ralph, Danny, Tom and everyone else who got my "drift" regarding a
"new" ramp at High Rock. Wish it was as easy as saying "lets build a radial
ramp". LOL. History tells a different story. We're lucky we have what we
have there at all.
And...I think that in our overall group conciousness..we should continue to
try to keep High Rock as our premier local site meaning; fly it as often as
humanly possible. It truly is a fantastic place to fly, thermal and ridge
soar. Not to mention the pretty damn good LZ complete with pavillion and
landowners who dig us. And....basically one hour from Baltimore and
Washington? HELLO....!!! What more do ya' want?
And... Emma needs cash and we need to keep our presence up there. Atop is a
awesome spectator site and excellent PR arena for the sport..unlike any
other site around the immediate vicinity. And I agree that in ( most )
conditions, High Rock is not only the epitomy of Foot Launch hanggliding,
but also one of the easier mountain launches...given the use of a proper
crew.
High Rock is full of history, adrenaline, and fun ( although a slot launch
would kinda be cool ). And...whether you like paragliding or not...a slot
would be a better alternative to a radial ramp and...open HR up as a premier
hanggliding AND paragliding site which....( again..like it or not ) would
help sustain the site for years to come due to revenues and usage. My site
improvement vote is for some tree removal to create an alternative launch.
But this too is an old discussion.
Either way...High Rock is a gem among gems.

A hangar where I can keep my glider set up. (And a way to transport
it in that condition back to launch - how about a funicular?) A
fully stocked bar in the pavilion of the LZ. Hot tub, masseuse,
