I didn't get to soar my glider because I blew my launch and dumped into the trees. Instead, I was treated to something much more important and inspiring (even more so when so undeserved): the enormous support and team effort of the community of pilots with whom I fly. I cannot now, nor ever, properly thank all of you enough. Perhaps the best way I could thank everyone would be to never have you all risking life and limb again for me by scrabbling down rocks, scaling trees, or going out on a limb.
In my first attempts at processing my mistakes, I have opted for self-depracating humor...please enjoy it in the spirit of humor it is offered, and with my heartfelt thanks. I have tried to capture the range of activities involved, and the comments expressed (and assumed) though artistic license has been liberally applied.
My New Year will indeed be a happy one, (and hopefully a wiser one) as I am able to kiss the ground unhurt, not even a bruise, due to the heroic efforts of a wonderful group of people ( and this includes only a small sampling of those involved).

A more serious analysis of my errors will follow after a good night's sleep. Please feel free to write up your impressions of my poor launch. I welcome everyone's input. -L.

Linda, just read your post, I'm very glad that you
are uninjured! I hope that you will be able to take
away something positive from the experience, and
that we will see you flying again at HRock soon,
safer and wiser.
As Tom said, you are in good company. Happy to relate
an experience of my own at Woodstock, maybe sometime
after a brew or three.
Hope that your glider isn't too banged up. Likewise your
desire to fly.

High Rock
Linda,
Switching conditions at High Rock can result in sudden lift under a wing just at takeoff. I had no such excuse and made lots of incomprehensively stupid mistakes before creaming-in badly at Ritchie's Knob during the Pulpit Fly-in several years ago. I was the grateful recipient of immediate assistance from Tom McGowen, Bacil D. and other pilots. Mark Fink packed up my stuff in Johnny's motel, while others did the same for my battered Stealth. Late the next day Ellis Kim drove me home from hospital in central Pennsylvania, we didn't arrive until about 1am, and she had to go to work that day. We are indeed fortunate to have such caring and competent fellow pilots. I am glad you are OK.

Linda,
We are so glad that you are OK. So glad. We love you so much, you crazy, cute little thing, all full of enthusiasm, you are not allowed to get hurt.
The CHGPA people are pretty great friends to have. Bruce, Carlos, Tom, Marc, and the rest-- thanks for doing and saying exactly the right things.

Actually, Pete Schumann was the principal hero of the day. Very interesting dynamics between us and the collective rescue squads of what seemed like all of Washington county.Paul Tjaden wrote:Linda,

Great Googly-moo!
Omigosh!!! I'm VERY glad you're okay Linda, and look forward to hearing more about it (to learn from it!). And that photo of Pete in the tree blew Holly and I away---that branch looked about an inch in diameter! And Linda, if that's where you ended up, my heart goes out to you---I know that must have been scary.

There was a guy there taking pictures with a couple of very expensive
looking cameras. I didn't get a chance to ask about pictures.

It's like deja vu all over again. Having been there myself on more than one occasion, I'd like to congratulate Linda on her excellent attitude! Going into the trees can be very scary, very dangerous, but is always very embarrassing, especially when it results in a big production with lots of onlookers. Of course, no one has actually died from embarrassment and the recovery from that condition is pretty short-term.
I'm glad there were many folks around to offer assistance and you won't find a better tree-climber than Pete. I hope the glider wasn't too banged up, but I always seemed to trash my wings when I treed them. Still, equipment can easily be repaired or replaced. That's why everyone should own a back up glider.
I'll be interested in hearing more about what happened. Don't forget to file an accident report with the USHGA. You can do it on-line at their website.

whoa,
Quite a picture, glad to hear the no injury part,we all make mistakes and or get socked with just plain bad luck, with your enthusiasm and dedication to the sport I know you won't be on the ground for long.Best wishes for a happy and safe New Year. RichB
Wow....why does everything happen when I'm not there?!
uh...okay, take that back. Welcome to the tree club. Those initiations are a bear, ain't they? Glad you're okay! Glad plenty of folks were there to take care of you. I don't think you ever really learn just how wonderful our local tribe is until you land in a tree. Not that I'm advocating it.
Loved the song.
You are now fully qualified to become a club officer.

OK. I am willing to take on a position when you need one filled, but I think I would be the worst at the money thing, (speaking from personal experience I never even balance my checkbook) though that might be the least time consuming.
I owe everyone more than I can possibly repay in any way, but if taking on a club office will make a start at returning something to the community, I will do it. - Linda

Hey, Richard - Yanni showed up yesterday to crew. Observed a couple
of launches and worked into wire crewing some more. (Anchored
bantamweight Danny B. for a couple, too.) Lost 40 pounds in five
weeks on a diet of pineapple and saurkraut trying to salvage his
investment in that Eagle 180. I should introduce him to my wife.
LOL. He could patent "the hang gliding diet"! yanni, if you are
out there, great meeting you and welcome to the club. look forward
to flying with you. - Hugh

Hey Daniel! We may have a live one!
Now I believe Brian was referring to officers of the metaphoric tree-
huggers' club - and I will give you an opportunity to reconsider
based on possible crash-induced dementia, but if upon reflection you
would consider the post of CHGPA treasurer, we are looking for
someone to replace me. I have said that, upon relief, I would take
over the site guide from Christy, who has done it for a generation or
so...
