Instruments on the legs:
+ easier to read
+ cheaper than a cockpit
- takes more time to mount them
- I lost my GPS that way
Cockpit
+ more convenient to mount
+ extra storage for a camera, something to drink, ...
- more expensive
- less convenient to fly with
After I had lost my GPS this summer, I started to fly with a cockpit. I get more and more used to it and it works well, but I still don't like that thing hanging in front of my chest that much. However, I don't think that I will switch back to leg-mounted instruments.
One of the best solutions in my opinion would be to have one single device combining GPS and vario on my leg. During my flights, I need at most the beep-beep, the height and the groundspeed. Maybe occasionally the direction to a waypoint. I think the Flytec 5020 (or Braeuniger Competino, the same device) would offer this. But I already have a vario and a separate GPS, so I don't want to spend that much money.
Cheers,
Marcel
