Cow Pie Sunday ( no BS..LOL )

Post by Richard Hays »

Arrived at the Pie at about 11am. Dead as a doornail. But....hey, it
wasn't blowing down or blown out so...we set up.

After laying down the electric fencing, we were cleared to go. But...this
was the first time flying the hill in dead calm. Not sure what the outcome
would be.

* Cow pie is a great hill. But....it is a shallow launch. We've always had
some wind with it, making launches pretty easy. There is a steeper portion
that makes light wind launches more probable and of course...thats' where we
set up for our runs. But its' still shallow.

This launch point however; faces more NW vs. NNW which the hill
predominately faces. No worries though, as the LZ is wide open and free of
the usual issues. And...the wind was predominately from the NW.

Janni P. and Glen Hardy set up, as did my other newbie student ( Rusty from
Harrisburg ). Rusty did fabulous on his first outing at Hardy Hill about 3
weeks ago, but...it was three weeks ago and I was somewhat unsure how he
would do. But.....this is a primo beginner hill so, I wasn't overly
concerned.

I was more concerned about Glen and Janni. Both are strong H-2's and
mountain ready. I was concerned they would somewhat scoff at the "easy"
hill. But...they took it in stride and actually had quite a good time
practicing their FSL techniques and even incorporated mellow "S" turns along
the way. Rusty did fantastic as well, and may be ready for his H-1 rating
very soon.

We flew until sunset. Winds had actually increased throughout the day, but
not to the forecasted 5-10. The most we saw was about 3 mph straight in.

Good time had by all. After the last couple of "not so good" weekends, this
day was a real pleasure. And...the infamous "pies" were frozen solid,
making them more of a trip hazard than a slip hazard today. LOL.

Cheers!
