Thur at Woodstock
Just wanted to thank Steve and Tom M. as well as Nelson for inviting me to fly and helping me (and Wesley) out on Thur.? It took most of the day, be eventually the wind backed off late in the day and were able to fly.? It was maybe 8 to 10+ and a little cross but cycling straight in at times and Wesley and I had good launches.? Flew for about 20 minutes in some punchy air.? I had the same ol' problem with my harness (stuffed full of glider bags, the cocoon was tough to get my toe into) and finally got into it after 10 minutes or so.? Much better after that, still a little thermal and ridge lift left.? Beautiful afternoon, but getting dark as we landed.? Wesley had a much nicer approach and landing than me.? A bit?cold at launch but bearable and worth the 4 hour wait to?finally getting in another Mountain launch.? Maybe tomorrow if I can get some time, it looks much lighter and a bit colder!? I'm sure I can get much more than 20 minutes if I don't freeze.? Hoping....?

tTp on getting into a cocoon boot..
I?m not sure what your specific problem may be but I?ll offer some general advice. It?s best to get a foot into the boot while still upright just post launch. The secret is to lift a foot laterally into the boot. If you try to lift your foot directly ahead to get into the boot, your knee will push the boot away from you. It will be very difficult if not impossible to get into the boot if you try to lift your foot directly ahead into the boot. If you don?t get into the boot just after the launch, fly the glider w/o being in the boot. Then when you are clear of terrain and other pilots, try getting into it. Remember to not to forget to fly the glider. Once you get the hang of getting into the boot, it will become second nature and you?ll enjoy the simplicity of a cocoon harness.
See these and especially img10677, see where my left foot/knee is.

It also helps if you pop the nose as you come off of launch, because it
slows the glider down and will swing you forward into the harness.

You could also attach a bungee from the bottom of your boot to the bottom
of your, uh, boot. Then as soon as you let go of the boot it goes #snap#
and there you are with your feet right where they belong.
Then we all come and haul you out of the trees at the bottom of launch.

Thanks top all for the info.??I have no problem getting into this harness when I don't have anything packed/stored in the big harness pocket.? It's no cake walk, but it's doable.? And yes I learned (the hard way) to swing my foot in laterally/from the side.?
?? The real problem is when I put stuff in there, it settles to the bottom (gravity) and then when I swing my toe to kick in... it just kicks the bulging bottom of the harness away.? I eventually fly away from the hill, and have to use my hands and feet to get one toe in..? I come up laterally, but all the crap in the harness is making my life miserable.?? I'm going to fly next time with nothing in there, and I'll stow all the crap on the keel and strapped to my back.
? ? Danny, those shots you linked to are impressive.? Your toe is hooking in no more than 5 feet off launch!? I like the loop on the end to hold it in your hand and I'll use the foot in and stretch it out before launch trick too, that should help.? But I don't think I'll be trying that quickly after launch just yet!?
?
?? Is there a consensus on Sat yet?? I may be able to ditch my responsibilities.?
?
Thanks again,
?

John, you could try changing the way you pack up your bags inside the compartment.? I like to roll my glider bag down to the last 2 feet (with all the accessory bags inside), then tuck it inside itself like a sock, and zip up.? It makes for a compact package.? Maybe you could devise something similar but instead make the “package” longer and bulkier at the top, then wrap it with some of your glider velcros.? Once compressed by the straps the package would be discouraged from bunching up at the bottom.? It would have more structure.? If that explaination made no sense, imagine rolling your own cigarette and then wrapping tight with velcros.
?
Or maybe some male Velcro sewn into the compartment near the top, then a package wrapped with Velcro straps would have somewhere to grab.
?
Also, something more radical….you could narrow the storage pocket in the last 6-12 inches so it can’t bulge out so far in the foot area.? That would encourage the packed items to stay high.
?
Good luck

Kevin,
??? Yes, I've been thinking of using the straps to bundle it up and keep it from dropping down to the bottom, where my dejected feet have been trying to make an entry.? I think I can get the whole package down to a small "sock" as you say and I like the idea of making the shape as to discourage it from falling down.??
?? In the short run, I'd like to launch and get my *#@!% (*#@!%) toes into the harness, so I'll probably just burn all that stuff before launch, or maybe sell it off for a six pack???In the long run, I think shaping it properly is a good idea and I'll give it a shot along with some?velcro straps to keep it up higher, away from my toe hold and entry.?? Thanks.

If you don’t get into the boot just after the launch, fly the glider w/o being in the boot. Then when you are clear of terrain and other pilots, try getting into it. Remember to not to forget to fly the glider. Once you get the hang of getting into the boot, it will become second nature and you’ll enjoy the simplicity of a cocoon harness.
See these and especially img10677, see where my left foot/knee is.

Hey Jim,
???? the first time I flew, I put all the bags into the harness... miserable.? Then I tried with most of them tied to the keel and just a couple inside the harness....? No Good.? Next time, there will be nothing in that damn harness.? I agree... mucking around with it near a mtn is a no good idea.? I usually fly far out and away from the mtn to do it... and lose lots of 'tude in the process...? yuck.? Next time it'll be much better.
?
Thanks
?
John

Have someone show you how to pack your bags into the sail of your glider. You can use the velcro straps to strap it to the keel up inside the double surface.
Mucking around with your boot is a great way to plow yourself into the side of a mountain. They fit better in the sail anyway.

Ya know.....you could just get a pod and be done with it. Problem with leaving all your bags at launch are:
?
A. You can't finish packing up in the LZ until someone brings down your bags or you go get them.
?
B. If you get low and deck it away from the LZ, the above problems are compounded.
?
Guess none of this matters if you pack them in your glider. I was always a little concerned about doing that. Had visions of everything coming loose and ending up out at the wing tip causing a huge spiral.....?I'm sure that's not legitimate, just my paranoia.
?
Glad Highland's opening soon. Not sure yet when we'll be up there. Probably not until late May / early June. Definitely want to try the Competition!!

Pod!!??They got to you!!? Bastages!!??How much?are?Adam and Sunny paying you?? What's your cut?!??Man... Et tu?? I have a FiFi to support so that whole pod thing is unlikely...?
?? Anyway.. I like my?draggy (gives me an excuse), problematic cocoon but need a better system for the Mtns.? I think I can get it all tied well onto my Forward keel.? It doesn't way a ton so if done properly it probably won't be a problem.? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comoffice" />
?? That comp is H3+... maybe they'll have a kiddy comp for cocoon only H2's?and make it so your flying score is?multiplied by how many Budweisers you drink after landing?? Plus there should be bikini's and stuff... and limousines...? and sharks with laser beams on their heads.??I'm gearin' up!

Take your glider bag... fold it in 1/2, tip to tip. Do this over and over, keeping it nice and flat. As you're folding it, put your other bags in it and fold them with it. Don't put your velcro straps in.
When you've got it down to about a 1 foot size, you're ready. Slap it up on your keel and use all your velcro straps to secure it to the keel. It should look kinda like pipe insulation.

That's my plan.? Just want to be sure it's not going to bring my Center of Gravity forward too much...?? that's why the first time I did it I put only 1/2 the bags there.? No problem with balance, so I'd guess all of them will be fine.? My second concern is the VG, it does not appear to interfere with the crossbar, but I just want to be sure.? Seems like folks have been doing it this way for years so it should be fine, VG and all?? THanks Jim
