Jazz, music etc in the area

Post by brianvh »

Okay, we just started a thread in the General discussion group that started with Bob Dylan than morphed over into live music. I think we need to start listing all the hot places. here's what we have so far:

1. Madam's Organ Tuesday nights. Delta Blues
2. Takoma Park, odd weekend friday and saturday nights, amazing arabic music. I've heard they're about to start up on a regular schedule, will post back.
3. From Gary Devan, Blues at Bangkok blues in Alexandria, tuesday nights.
4. from Dave Rice, 49 west in Annapolis, thursday nights.

I seriously want to hit these places more often, if people will jump in and join. I'll definitely be joining Gary one of these tuesday nights.

Gary - once you know about the schedule for sure, post it. I think we should move this thread to "ground based fun"

this is the the calendar. looks like the mondays of the 3rd & 17th in october. i'm almost always there on open mike nites - starts 7:30. there are generally one or two 1/2 priced "happy hour" food items til 7:00.
i'll let you kick the thread as you see fit. gary

be forewarned. open mike means open mike. whereas it is mostly blues based rock as well as blues, one night a drummer from 'root boy slim' showed up with two buddies and played disco (seriously) for half the night! another night a guy showed and had such a good time playing blues on his trombone(!) that i bought him a beer because i had such a good time watching him have such a good time, never mind how well he played. live music is a kick.

Unfortunately I can't make monday nights until around 8:30 or so. I'll probably check out the vocalist tomorrow (tuesday) and then show up at the monday night jam session later this month.

No, I don't know her, but I've rarely been let down by a female jazz vocalist. I'm gonna show up for dinner tomorrow around 7:30-8:00. Would like to see anyone.

re: melanie mason
well the word is that she has a booking with her group at some thee-ater in rockvile, the contract for which stipulates that the group doesn't play in the area for five weeks prior and after (the quote was: "are they paying you that much?" "yep").
as playing solo doesn't violate that contract, they were able to get her for a night (and again in nov., i think). people said she was definitely worth a listen.
i'll probably stop over, since you're going to show (post if you're not going to make it). if, after a while, we can't figure out who the other is - look for a guy with a minature guitar with flashing lights on his ear. i normally save that for special occasions, so you just might mention your name to kim, behind the bar. cheers.

I'll be wearing the High Rock Tshirt. We never managed to meet at the high rock party, but you may recognize me as one of the grimey, half-crazed folks in the cooking area. I'll be slightly more presentable tonight.

bangkok blues: last night these two guys show up who no one had ever seen before. two cousins from madagascar it turns out. one plays a tenor sax while the other plays a melodaphone. later one steps in on piano. then later the sax guy sits in on piano while the melodaphone guys plays bass. it ends up with just them with the phenomenal house drummer, bobby lee, leading them all around and back on some amazing jazz improv. they tore the place up. said the would be back in two weeks.

SueAnn Recovery Charity Concert
with
'Blues On Board' +
'Group Therapy' +
Robert Lighthouse +
Chai +
Tala

SueAnn came in as the primary 'savior' investor along with John to join with Chai as operators of Bangkok Blues.

she is a 'sweetie' and fills in as a great cook as well as being an astute business person.

approximately two weeks ago she was suddenly afflicted with
a condition of the spine that has left her paralyzed.

she is still hospitalized and dealing with the matter.
insurance policies, being what the are, have left her with significant expenses.

there will be a charity event for her tomorrow ( sat, 19th) at Bangkok Blues.

the music/night is bound to be great, personal and emotionally inspired.

plenty of blues and rock plus jazz ( Tala is a new guy on the scene who is the phenomenally talented 'jazz guy' i'd referred to previously who 'just showed up').

I went out to 49 West in Annapolis Thursday night to hear the Rob Levit
Trio. My mom is in town so I invited her to go. I also invited my
daughter's band director as we are working on a project to get the trio
to play at the middle school. As has usually been the case in my life
none of the women could make it, so I went alone.

It was crowded and I got there late so I stood at the back for the first
set. The room cleared out for the second set so there were tables
available.

The trio was great as usual and did a very nice rendition of 'Oh
Christmas Tree' that, I think, was improvised on the spot. Rob spent
the evening wishing everyone a Happy ChristmaKwanzakkuh.

The bass player, Amy Shook, has a new quartet that plays at 49 West on
the occasional Wednesday. She is joined by her husband who plays tenor
sax in the US Army Jazz Ensemble, Frank Russo on drums and a keyboard
player who's name I didn't recognize. Now I have to figure out how to
get a Thursday off work so I can go hear them. But they only play from
until 11:00 so maybe I just need a Thursday without any really important
work to do.

While I was there I remembered that I should have posted that I was
going. I'll try to do better next time.

Happy ChristmaKwanzakkuh,

Dave
