Woodstock Day Sat28Mar?

Post by markc »

Looking a bit north at the moment, both surface and 3k. But I like that the sfc gust factor is supposed to drop out at 4pm, and that it's supposed to be a full-sun day. Thinking/hoping that valley heating might funnel some good cycles into launch.

Smithsburg also a possibility, but winds look a bit stronger up there, and the sfc gust factor doesn't drop until 6pm. Might not be the best practice day...

Will check again tomorrow AM : Glider on vehicle, hopefully it will be going somewhere :D

The latest updates for both sfc and 3k have improved a bit, and the sfc gusts are supposed to back off at 3pm. Definitely looks worth the drive to me, my ETA will be about 12:30. Hoping for a late-ish afternoon flight. Bacil might swing by, and perhaps a friend of his from NY who's passing through on the way to FL.

Things turned out well! No-one around for most of the day. But towards 4pm, Bruce (PG) arrived, got to meet him and briefly learned that he has a pretty wild mountaineering/flying background in AK ("quickest way to get back down"). Also (re) met Josh Mazza. Did not have a chance to greet the third PG pilot who flew today because I was in the air at that point.

In short: Conditions improved (for HG) around 4:45pm, and I had a flight of about 1:40. Topped out at 3k above launch twice, and had one very nice period just drifting along the saddle between the front and back ridges, N to S. Some strong stuff at times... There was one crank-and-bank'er that literally just spit me out the other way as I was trying to get back into the core. "Ok, fine, you win!" :)

I only ran a couple fingers north, this was very much a back-into-it kind of day. Good landing, and I even scored a ride back up top from some bystanders.

Thanks to Bruce for his help getting me staged on launch, and for a launch video 8)

I hear that Anthony L had a good practice day at Smithsburg, so maybe he will also be getting back into mtn flying. Cheers!
