Woodstock weekend 11/12 - 11/13

Post by XCanytime »

Looks like a Woodstock weekend is shaping up. Warmer Saturday vs. Sunday. Who can fly and when? Bacil

Definitely interested! It'll depend on how that storm system tracks, and the uppers. But.... Fingers crossed that we'll get at least one fly-day!

At the moment it's looking pretty light at Woodstock. That would point to the Pulpit on Saturday. Bacil

Keeping a close eye on things.... But might be one of those light-WS/strong-Pulpit days on Sat. We'll see!

I knew the fcst was bogus. Blowing like hell at Woodstock. Redirecting there. Bacil

Surface forecast seems fairly Pulpit-able, and the ADDS3k seems pretty benign. But becoming mostly cloudy, and a chance of some rain by the end of the day. Hmmmm....

*Edit* Just saw Bacil's post, thinking.

I think I'll throw the glider on, then stage somewhere on the road and see what the 10-ish forecast update looks like....

FYI Danny, looks like Bacil, Allan, Will, Johander will be giving The Pulpit a try. I'm still on the fence...

Summary: Both Allan and Will had soaring flights in smooth air, w/ Allan's lasting longer (30? minutes to 10? minutes). Johander got there late (2:45P), set up, but by the time he was ready to go it died after a short rain sprinkle. So he DNF. Bacil

Bari and I have been keeping an eye on the forecasts, in hopes that the gustiness might show signs of a let-up by the end of the day. But I'm not seeing that, and the ADDS 3k is solid 20-30kts, all day. So starting to get a bit pessimistic.... Any other opinions?

I got to Woodstock launch by 9:15A. Very strong initially, then a moderating of conditions for a half hour or so. Then by 10A+ it ramped up again, and blew strong until I threw in the towel by 11:15A and started breaking down the glider. Allan and Will showed up by this time, leaving their gliders on the truck. By 1:30P it had settled down enough to convince Allan and Will to get their gliders. Allan set up his glider, then broke it down around 2:45P.

I dropped by Front Royal Airport (FRR) on the way home. Met one the 5 sailplane pilots who flew earlier from FRR. He had a 4.5 hour flight. Allan, Will, and I saw at least 4 sailplanes buzz the Woodstock launch. Also at the airport I got to see a Park Police helo land at the airport, then take off to go rescue an injured hiker at Buzzard Rock.

An interesting day. It was 38° at launch. Bacil
