Pulpit Wed 10/20/2021

Post by wmelo »

A mainly sunny sky. High 71F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph.

Just checking if we will have enough slackers to fly.

Looks like a good crowd is forming. Tom S. from PA ETA noonish? Walt ETA noonish. Jon Brantley ETA 2:30P - 3P. Pat F. and wife Amanda from PA ETA 2P. Amanda is experienced at wire crewing. Rich B. is coming to help launches. My ETA 1Pish. Hope more show up, cuz, in the words of Billy Crystal's Fernando Lamas, "You (the fcst) look mahvelous" . Bacil

Arrived on time to find Tom and Walt setting up. Clear blue skies and perfect (to me) winds on the ramp. While I set up Allan and Bari arrived. With Allan, Walt, and Tom's assistance I had a wings level elevator launch just after 2P. Struggled initially to gain altitude in the turbulent SW cross, so I headed down to the Rt. 16 xing and further to find lift to 3200' MSL. Prior to this tried to beckon pilots to join me doing two launch flybys but nobody bit. Finally Tom got airborne in his Falcon 195 and joined me, and then Bari in his Malibu. Bari and I flew together for a while, w/ me getting close to 4K' MSL south of the radio towers, and Bari getting to 4300'+ MSL. I decided to fly upwind and tag Rt. 522, then turn around and land in the main LZ. Turned around just shy of 522, and made it back to the main w/ plenty of altitude to spare. Executed an accurate approach and had a good landing into a 10+ MPH west breeze down the centerline of the "runway". Tom had landed prior to me, and was breaking down by the corn. I carried the glider down to the breakdown area, and was accosted by 3 large dogs who "guard" the chicken house across the street. They were barking mostly at the glider, and trailed me nearly all the way down to the breakdown area. I had to retrieve a large branch to shoo them back across the street where they belonged. Amanda was in her car, and was watching her husband Pat's flight. Rich came down to retrieve Tom and Bari for wire crew for Walt, who was the tail end Charlie of the pilot queue. Once Pat landed, he and Amanda gave Jon Brantley and I body rides back to launch. All 7 pilots who flew had soaring flights. Pulpit looks good Friday and Saturday as well. Bacil
