Pulpit on Saturday

Post by 1otIII2007 »

The winds look favorable for flying the Pulpit Saturday afternoon. Who is interested in flying there?

I will check again by 10:00am tomorrow and take a decision then.

Hmmm.... NWS sfc isn't calling for W until the very end of the day (like, 5pm). Decent temps....

The ADDS 3k looks pretty darn strong at the moment.

Probably worth keeping an eye on things though. Like Walt, will have a look tomorrow AM.

An alternative might be a practice day at Taylor. But that seems pretty iffy too, would require the rain to move through, and no lingering late-day showers. Guess we'll see!

I'm going to bail on the Pulpit today.

Also having trouble getting enthusiastic about Taylor, given that it looks to be a very damp and grey afternoon down there. I suppose I could get motivated if there's a bunch of pilots who plan to go.... Anyone hearing anything like that?

I'll be there ~ 2:45P. Blowing 12 MPH due west. What's the problem? Bacil

5 pilots showed up and one flew. We had enough wire crew for more people to fly.

Walt, Danny B., Anthony & Bacilia, and I showed up to help Allan fly yesterday at the Pulpit. The river of air above was moving fast, as indicated by the clouds heading east at a rapid pace. Winds on the ramp were barely touching 10 MPH at times. Allan had a nice takeoff, but stepped in too many potholes out away from the ridge. He ended up squeaking it in into the main LZ. Walt never took his glider off of his vehicle. In retrospect, after we left the conditions on the ramp improved, but not enough in my opinion to be bulletproof soarable. Bacil

I appreciate all the help I got yesterday flying at the Pulpit. I launched into what appeared like soaring conditions. But all I found in the way of lift was little bubbles that were not feasible to work. The winds were out of the south in the landing field which is most likely why there was almost no ridge lift. No thermals either because it was mostly cloudy when I flew. I was low enough to consider landing in the alternative landing field. But my glide looked high enough at all times, so I kept going for the main field.
I may have been able to stay up if I would have waited until after 4:00 to launch. According to the Holfuy data after 4:00 it started to blow in straighter and a bit stronger. Plus it was much more sunny.

Glad things worked out for a flight!

Yeah, understand that the day turned out to be at least doable... But I'm getting picky, and odds just didn't seem all that great. Yada-yada-coulda-shoulda :D

Kinda kicking myself for bailing on Taylor though... Two hours of sunny conditions late PM in Rockville MD, perhaps the hill was working? Did a run instead, sigh.

No worries, since both days of next weekend look great (so far). Bacil
