We conducted a survey last week of how members prefer to communicate about flying and with other members of the club. We had 39 total respondents, with 69% paraglider, 23% hang glider and the rest bi-wingal. The majority of the respondents fly a couple times a month.

The communication tool with the most use was WhatsApp, followed by the Google group and third, the web forum. For coordination of flying activities, most use WhatsApp or some informal method of email/text among friends. And while there was a preference for WhatsApp for flying coordination, there was also a majority view that we should use separate channels for social/non-flying communication and flying communication. And the leading preference for a channel for non-flying communications was WhatsApp.

So we’re going to pilot a second WhatsApp channel for the club. The existing one will be used for flying coordination only to reduce the chatter there to essentials of flying safety, retrieve coordination, etc. The new channel should be used for everything else.
