Definitely have my eye on Sunday Allan, whether it be WStock or a training hill day! Still too early to know what the day will bring, but I'm hoping we'll have another good (though cold!!!!) one. Fingers crossed.

I'm eyeing the forecasts for both days. At the moment, not thrilled by the gust factor on the NWS sfc hourly for Sat, would like to see it dropped more than just an hour before sunset.... But we'll see, maybe the front will move through quickly and tomorrow's update will beckon! :D

An alternative might be a fairly early arrival at WStock on Sunday AM, by 10am or earlier. Or, the Pulpit in the afternoon. Start placing your bets! :)

The 9:30am update for the NWS surface hourly was just posted. Gusty all afternoon of course, with NW11G21 right at sunset. And the ADDS 3k is strong, verging into the 30-40kts color. Not sure I want to gamble on such a day..... Anyone gung-ho?

Oh, what the heck! It's a bigger gamble than last weekend, but I'll swing by WStock for a look. I think Gary S plans to as well.

Wow, did I screw up today!

Arrived at the LZ around 11:00, and replaced the batteries in my vario while waiting for Gary to arrive... Winds were pretty good down low, we were psyched! Quick trip up top, arrived shortly before noon. All of the hangies were pushing their setups big-time, we knew that the winds were forecast to back off by early afternoon.

Allan was the first HG to give it a try, sliding into the slot during some cycles that were too strong for the PGers. Then (of course) if got light, not enough air to move the trees at the bottom on the slot. I helped on his wing, and eventually Allan had a 9-ish/10-ish cycle, and he was off, up-and-out!

I then headed to my glider, Gary was in the queue with some PGers.... And.... WTH? My vario wouldn't turn on. I had replaced the batteries with duds. F-me!

The smart thing to do would be to take Gary's truck down immediately, to see if the (previously-opened) pack of batteries that I'd used had any which were still good.

Or, just get into the darn queue and launch, screw the vario!

But no.... I waffled around, asking various people if they had a double-A that I could borrow. Helped with a couple launches... Finally *did* take Gary's truck back down to the LZ and did manage to get 40% on the vario with some battery juggling. Back up top, and there were muliple PGers in the queue, and there was a new-ish HG pilot in the queue. Helped him launch.... And then it was 3-5mph in the slot, with occasional 7, but crossing from the N. I decided to break down up top.

Sigh.

I've heard that Tom C (PG) flew down to Massanutten and *back*, and then landed at Front Royal? Wow!!!!!

Like Mark said I was the first HG to launch. I had a good cycle and got up without any difficulty. Some of the thermals were going up pretty fast but I did not get higher than 1500' over launch. Flew for an hour but I was getting cold so I landed.

Here is a link to the flight: https://ayvri.com/scene/0jgrreyeko/ckid ... 69fzsrkh3v

Tom flew to The Knob (at the end of Short Mountain) and back, and then landed at Front Royal. It's an extra 22 miles from The Knob to Massanutten Peak, and back again. That's an extra 3.75 hours of flight time, assuming an average groundspeed of 12 MPH (generous for a PG). Bacil

He trained at Blue Sky on truck tow and just got signed off as H2. I taught him to foot launch the weekend before last in lighter conditions. He showed competence and got signed off. I just wanted him to get some higher wind ground handling and more launch practice in different conditions before mountain launching. Sounds like the condition were light enough for his experience and landed where he was told to land.
