Re: Woodstock, Monday June 3rd
Sure was an incredible flying day. It was so nice to have lots of lift and I got to 7345 msl but cold for the fingers in gloves! Landed at LZ with others. One of my higher flights for years.

I checked out Ward's awesome flight track. I'd say 56+ miles, since he landed at Port Republic. Many years ago (5/29/05) I retrieved John Dullahan from the same vicinity of Port Republic, remembering John's distance as 56+ miles or so. Bacil

Whoa, how to add to the superlatives for an awesome day? Will try....
We had a great turnout for a weekday flight: Ward, Knut, Gary, Joe S, Walt, Randy, me, John M, Nelson, John McA, and Tom McG. Hope I didn't miss anyone!
My plan to meet in the bridge LZ early-ish was stymied by Wash DC traffic.... Oh sure, leave a bit after 9:00am on a Monday, things will have cleared out by then, right? 1:40 to the field, no problem!
NOT! Many thanks to those who planned better than I did, and esp. to Randy and Gary for the body ride and glider ride back up to launch at the end of the day.
My flight was the best I've had in a DAMN long time, can't actually remember the last time conditions were so good. Just after launch I found a thermal that took me to 4.4k MSL, a tad north of the slot. That was followed by 5975 MSL, 7100 MSL, and 8230 MSL. All in the same general area, behind and above launch, drifting into Fort Valley.
I punched out upwind after most of those climbs, and on the last one I found a nice street that allowed me to basically cross the valley. Coulda/shoulda taken it to the WV ridges, they were totally makeable... But all I could think of was the phone call if I had to land out: "Say, could someone come get me? After you've all done hour+ turnarounds from the LZ back up top?".
Nah, don't think so! And with work issues that could not be dodged on Tuesday, well.... Another time. I am not complaining, I was able to soar at will in the valley, for longer than I've ever done before. Great video, looking north to Signal Knob and south to Woodstock.
Landing at 4:30 was a challenge, lift and thermals everywhere. But when you are tired and cold... whaddya gonna do, right?
Fantastic day.

Nice pics. Could've landed at the winery. I see it left of center at near the bottom of the 3rd pic. They would've given you a ride back . Bacil

Mark, They say “a picture is worth a thousand words”, but your middle of the valley image says so much more! This pic is a must for upcoming HG calendars. Amazing!
