2019 Blossom Kite Festival

Post by mingram »

The Blossom Kite Festival is scheduled for Saturday, March 30th (rain date: Sunday, March 31st). This is the one day of the year that we're allowed to kite paragliders on the mall.

This year it will be held on the NE quadrant (closer to 15th Street) due to turf restoration/permitting on the NW quadrant. I'm not sure where we should be kiting. Sometimes they want us in a designated area so I suggest asking an organizer if they have a preference.

Tommy Powers plans to bring his hang glider for demonstration. I will be out of town for a wedding, but it would be nice to have people kiting and lending a hand to Tommy.

From Tommy Powers, "For those who made it out to the Blossom Kite Festival, we could not have asked for a better day! We had some prime real estate for glider display, and if Donnie had taken a look out the back window of the White House he would have seen us CHGPA folks in his direct line of sight to the Washington Monument. We even got some special attention from the Secret Service on this one! Many thanks to Krista Auchenbach, Lisa Davis, and Jeff George for coming out and getting some kiting demonstrations in. We even had our own “Kite Club” kiting area set up by the Park Service just adjacent to the HG displays! Once kiting began, we had a lot of interested people inquiring about our sport. The crowds were pretty massive for the day, and I was able to get my very slowest bike ride ever around the mall after the event, but one of the most satisfying rides ever. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom and never have I seen such a gorgeous display in all the years attending the kite festival. Many thanks again to Krista, Lisa, Jeff, and all the other club members who stopped by for their annual checkup and kite fix – we really had a great day! "
