Big Spring 2018

Post by mcgowantk »

Dave Proctor and I just returned from another trip to Big Spring. The law of averages caught up to us, or maybe we experienced an outlying week of weather. The Mayor of Big Spring came by and said that he had just 0.3 inches of rain this year in his rain gauge - but we must have had 3 inches this week, plus a small tornado on Saturday. However, we had three great days. Dave flew a personal best of about 140 miles. I made goal one day after a 100 mile zig zag cross wind flight of 5 hours with a total of about 13 hours this week. Dan Lukaszewicz flew in the sport class and had a great week - he made goal at least once. Ric Caylor from PA also flew in the sport class.

Big Spring is a great place to fly - XC conditions are fantastic, lots of fields to land in, good lift, the people are very friendly. With any luck, I will make it back again next year.

Big Spring was not at its best this year, but it was still better than almost everywhere else. We only flew 3 out of 7 days. But....these were 3 great days. I flew my personal best of 140 miles on the first day, as Tom said. I ‘only’ got about 11 hours and 270 miles in those 3 flights. If you crave XC flying there isn’t a better place to fly.
