XC Flying clinic in Santa Terezinha, BA, Brazil with Beto Schmitz, Oct 2018

As you may know, I spent one week in Brasilia, DF, Brazil, participating in a HG clinic in Brasilia, DF, Brazil, with Brazilian champion Beto Schmitz. It was a wonderful experience! Beto is not only an outstanding pilot, but also a great HG instructor.

I liked so much the experience that I am planning to attend another clinic that it will be held in Santa Terezinha, BA, Brazil. Flights from DC/IAD/BWI are around $700-800.

My plan is to fly to Salvador, Bahia, spend the weekend there and then travel to Santa Terezinha and spend the week flying there. Salvador is an amazing city with many tourist attractions.

Santa Terezinha is considered a great destination for XC flights. The take off is in the “Serra da Jibóia” the location of the ramp, is 200 km from Salvador (2h trip).

I am planning to stay in a “Inn” managed by a HG pilot (not expensive at all). I am also planing rent again a double surface from Beto ($50 per day).

It would be really cool if we could have a couple of pilots from our club. Please note that one US dollar is worth now +- four Brazilian Reais. That makes the trip not only very attractive, but also very inexpensive.

Pousada (“In”) managed by HG pilot would cost $25per day per couple for a suite with TV, A/C, and small refrigerator. This includes breakfast.

Beto Schmitz confirmed that he will run the XC clinic in the last week of October in Santa Teresinha, Bahia, Brazil. I am currently checking flights tickets. I will stop by Brasília, & visit my relatives before going to Salvador (Bahia).

There are flights from Rio, São Paulo, Brasilia, & Panama City to Salvador, and direct flights from Wasghinton to São Paulo, Rio, & Panama City.

Like me, You can break the trip in phases: spend a few days in Rio, Brasilia. HG there before going to Salvador. Spend some days in Salvador to enjoy the city before or after going to Santa Terezinha.

If you want to go to Rio 1st, I can hook you up with HG pilots there who could assist you & rent you a glider.

Anyway, there are several routes & alternatives you can use to have fun in Brazil, and most importantly to fly safely in Santa Terezinha with Beto

although we have met several times, we don't know each other well- but I travel light and easy.

Walt has been very persuasive (talking it up at launch and such) about this trip, it sounds amazing!

Unfortunately I can't pull it off : A long-standing trip the week before, and then immediately into a production-crunch at work, the week of the clinic.

*sigh*

Remember: US citizens need a Visa to travel to Brazil. Visa applications can be easy done via internet

Hotel/Pousada https://www.estalagemserradajiboia.com/ every year Beto goes there to fly and do clinicas, prices Individual R$ 80, double R$ 70 including breakfast with fruits juices and etc..., extra meal lunch or dinner R$ 30. pilots normally get late at the pousada depend how far they fly 21:00 or 23:00 for example

Retrieval : car with driver for 3 pilots R$ 250,00. gasoline pay apart depend how far you go ( expenses divided between the pilots in car)

Pilots Must bring harness and instruments and radio VHF. Pilots would use frequencies between 144.000 to 145.000 MHz, important to have a good and clear talk system, also long range antenas .

Beto can arrange to pick you up in Salvador Bahia Airport and get you back there after the clinic for R$ 500,00 , distance about 250 km. Curency now is 1 US Dollar = R$ 3,9 brasilian rrais.

In addition, Clinic would cost R$1500 reais per pilot.
