6th Annual Silent Airshow

Post by XCanytime »

North Mountain Vineyard & Winery will be hosting a Silent Airshow on Saturday April 7th, 2018. We would like to have on display Hang Gliders and Paragliders. XC flights to the winery have been achieved, with 2 hang gliders landing there from Woodstock during the 2013 event, and 2 paragliders landing there from Edith's Gap during the 2014 event. 2015's event weather was not ideal, but then again the event was held in May, where the frequency of NW/SE weekends diminishes. The 2016 event was moved to the 2nd weekend of April in hopes that the probability of a NW weekend happening would be increased. Well a NW weekend did occur, but we had high winds and snow showers on the Saturday, so indoor activities dominated the day  . Last year was great; we had 2 hang gliders land at the winery. Let's hope that this year's weather is a repeat of last year in order to enable safe flights and in addition the possibility of XC flights to the winery. Bacil

Just a reminder this Saturday is the fly in at North Mountain Vineyards. The Wx looks like an early day and very cold for the hang gliders and a slightly warmer and later day for the paragliders. Bacil

What a difference a day makes  . Now 5 to 8 inches of snow predicted to fall on Woodstock Saturday. Emailed the owners of the winery to alert them and suggest rescheduling the fly in. Bacil

The owners are amenable to rescheduling the fly in for the 21st. Let's hope that it is NW or SE on that day. Bacil

Reminder that the fly in is this Saturday the 21st. Looks like good weather and average temps.
There is a wine party after 5P. All pilots and significant others are cordially invited to attend. Bacil

Planning to spend the weekend in Woodstock and visit NMV. Maybe we will get some flying in also.

Just heard from the winery owners. They are looking forward to seeing us pilots. There will be live music from 4P to 7P. A buffet will provide food for the pilots and their significant others during the wine club party from 5P to 7P. The weather looks great. Very light conditions are forecast, so it looks more like a day for paragliding versus hang gliding. Let's hope a few pilots make it to the winery. Bacil

Yup, the 'cast is very light... But I think I'll give it a go with the Falcon, planning to land at the field across the road from the old primary. Definitely doable in the event of a sledder.
And who knows, might luck into a thermal and have a soaring flight! Worth a gamble, right?

Which field are you referring to Mark? The flood plain on the left that has a power line bisecting the upper part? Thanks. Bacil

Not the flood plain field.... The property on the right side of the road, as you approach the old primary. Believe the landowners are the Schechtel's. Landed there once in the upper portion of the property, and they were welcoming.

But closer to the mtn, there's a section with a notable uphill slope. There *is* a power line to deal with.... And the trees along the base-leg side are tall.... But in a Falcon, I really think it would be a no-brainer. Have walked it several times, will do so again tomorrow.

Latest SFC update is still calling for an L&V day, though with a gradual turn to the NE, kicking in by 3pm.

So I'm planning to be at WS by 10:30 or so. With any luck, maybe a thermal or two will trickle into launch and allow for some safe launches.

Looks better this morning especially for PGs. Now mostly light NW most of the day. Some good thermal cycles could be very launchable for HG. ETA 11:30

Lots of PG folks heading to Edith's Gap this morning. I will head to Woodstock. Looks like mid afternoon might work if there are thermals available to us less talented. Forecast looked very light north to nnw till late in day.
