501 Saturday afternoon
Looks nice after 3P. Any interest? Bacil
Re: 501 Saturday afternoon
Sure. Looking good. Let's check in at Grimes first to see if they mind us landing there. The wind direction will be perfect for that.

Workin' and taxes this weekend, *sigh*. Hope you guys get some airtime, let us know how it goes!
Re: 501 Saturday afternoon
Bacil and I showed up a little past 3pm. Nice velocity but a little SW cross. Very soarable with a lot of Black vultures showing us what was going on. As predicted it turned STFI by 5PM. Waited just a little longer for things to cycle down into predictable launch conditions. After an easy launch I got to 1k over and made my way east. At that altitude the wind was actually a little SE which impeded my progress to get past the knob east of launch. Flew with a vertical kettle of Black vultures. It was weird that they were not really climbing as I blundered my way up through the swarm. I thought the video would be awesome, but you only see little specks passing by. Nice t-shirt flying after a cold winter! Didn't want to keep Bacil waiting so cut it short to 40 minutes.
Bacil radioed he had driven down into the valley off of 501 and had visual on me. Looked like a better landing area than the horse farm so I followed a lift line out. It was a long glide. Low power lines on the north side of the adjacent field kept me vigilant to keep my options open. Made it out with only enough altitude for a little S turn approach into the field. The Sport 2 is not a glide monster... Made a short approach and had ok position. Just as I was transitioning, I got a bad pop up was put into a turn close to the ground (reviewed video and some of it was technique related). Got that sorted out (which required some agressive gymnastics) and had an uneventful landing. I was expecting really mello landing conditions in a big open field. It could have easily turned out to be a gnarly experience.
Thanks to Bacil for the help and giving up a flying day.
