I received a call from Emma Jane's granddaughter. She said the Emma Jane passed away yesterday. There will be a graveside service for her (not at Davis Funeral home) at 9:30 on Monday. I did confirm this with Davis Funeral Home.

Re: Emma Jane
I might be able to find some photos of Emma Jane and family in the boxes of club history/etc that came my way. If so, will bring them along.
Re: Emma Jane
Will pilots be bringing their hang gliders like at Randy's service? I'm a local and plan to be there.

Here's a link to Emma-Jane's obituary:

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested, to help with funeral expenses. I'll definitely be doing so.
For a sense of how connected Emma-Jane and her family have been to hang gliding in this area, you might want to have a look at this video that 'Spark put together for the High Rock 30th Anniversary :

You'll see some photos of Emma-Jane in happier times at the 4:15 and 5:44 points, but there are many others throughout the video. As well as some amazing photos of flights from back-in-the-day.

Re: Emma Jane
Carlos checked with the funeral home, and we definitely can contribute towards the expenses for Emma-Jane's funeral. Simply make it clear that the donation is for Emma-Jane Carbaugh, perhaps on your check, or in an accompanying note.
If I'd been flying a typical sort of year (say, 10 flights?), times two, since I haven't been doing so for the last two years, with the customary donation for the landing field.... Well, that might add up to a couple hundred bucks. And even if we had 20 or so active High Rock pilots doing the same.... There would still be a balance.
So bottom line, feel free to give what you want, it will be a help to the family, and a recognition of Emma-Jane, and Harry, and Randy.

Check sent!
My guess is that the club won't be able to make a significant donation (though this is based on somewhat dated info about finances; so take this with a grain of salt, I could be wrong!).
If that's the case, and if you are/were a frequent pilot at High Rock... Then I encourage you to do the same.
The Carbaugh family has allowed we crazy HG pilots to land in their field for *40* years. At the oldest mid-Atlantic cliff launch site that there is.
In good times with huge numbers of pilots (wish I'd been flying back in those days!).
And in times with far-fewer pilots.
Regardless, if you have enjoyed some great High-Rock-Magic moments, as I have... As we all have.... Then this is probably a good time to acknowledge what HRock and the Carbaughs have meant to our flying community.

Re: Emma Jane
I'll miss Emma Jane. Friendliest kitchen table I've ever sat at. Truly sorry I missed the news until Monday night - I would like to have been at the service. I recall how hard hit she was when she lost Harry. But that was small compared to the deep depression following Randy's death. I prayed for her in those days, after sitting in the living room just listening to her. I don't know if Emma ever came out of that depression.
The first time I ever saw hang gliding in the mountains was the High Rock 20th in 1995. I drove up as a Hang Zero, with only about 10 lessons from KHK and John M. under my belt. Emma Jane has been a part of my life ever since.
Kay and I even spent my 50th birthday with her: https://sites.google.com/site/hgmemories/Home/50th
I thank her for being there for all of us.
A quick Google search turned up a surprising article:
Abandoned Hang-gliding Launch Pad
A labor of love built by local hang-gliding enthusiasts, this ideal launch spot was outlawed by the authorities and has since been largely abandoned. (undated, with recent photos)

"outlawed by authorities"?? anyone know about that?
