New Years Day

Post by Joe Schad »

Anyone venturing out Monday? Cold but might be flyable at Woodstock. Could be flyable at Woodstock today as well.

Hey Joe

I am in. It's not too cold to fly anyway. My fingers are crossed that the road stays open.

Considering it, depending on how the forecasts develop.... Would be a great way to start 2018 (if I can psych myself for 19 degrees on launch!)

Current midday forecast temps at ~500 ft above launch (2500 ft) for the first day of 2018:

NAM -> 6 degrees F
ECMWF -> 8 degrees F
GFS -> 6 degrees F

Ouch!!

Willing to help with launchs and retrievals.

Ward

PS: while the global casts are showing straight in wind directions, the NAM predicts a more westerly flow. But hey, 36 hrs from now anything can change.

Still on the fence... Probably won't make the call until I'm out-and-about tomorrow AM, feeling the actual temps.

Happy New year everyone. I was also riding the fence about flying today, until I got up to stoke the wood stove a few min. ago. As my feet crunched through snow, I checked the thermometer at 2 degrees. That is just temp, w/o wind chill. Wind chill at launch later today will be in low teens. I don't have enough layers for that and I don't want my hands to fall off, so call me a light weight. I am hugging the wood stove today and watching my cat "Cattywampuss" to make sure he does not burst into flames as he is known to sleep inches from a 400 deg surface. Does anyone know the flashpoint of a cat?

Just looked at the Front Royal temp, where it's supposedly 14....

Me no buying it : 8 degrees here in Rockville. 2 at Gary's. Although it's going to be a bright and sunny day, I think I'm gonna wimp out as well. I'd have to be buried in so many layers that I wouldn't even be able to tell I was flying!

HNY!

Happy New Year.

I am assuming the tower road is closed. But any chance I am wrong about that? The forecast shows increasing winds later in the day so hiking up would put me up there too late.

Thanks

Tom
