1:20 pm LZ conditions...
Primary: winds WNW 8-10 mph, main strip running perpendicular to the ridge is clear and rollable. There is one, bright pink streamer toward the end of the field. Other brown strip clear and rollable as well. Surrounding grass is about 3 feet high...
Secondary: calm winds. Thick grass about 2 feet high… Lots of thorny stuff… No windsock, and I forgot mine...

Woodstock--
I flew my hg after it had all but died, sled ride city (needed the practice). Jeff Eggers, led off and got the most air time, do not know what happened to him. Both Dan Tomlinson and Justin Stanley had sleds. Tom and Rick bailed to Dickeys. Everyone else on pg.

The hangies went to the Pulpit and all had soaring flights. In attendance: Ward, Bacil, Tim Bowen, Eric & Anthony LLoyd, Charley, Tev, Blaine and me. Ward went over the back to past the school.

Re: Memorial Day Weekend May 27-29
Arrived at Pulpit launch around 10:30A to find Ward already there, conditions straight in 5 to 10 MPH, and the sky clearing slowly. As Ward and I were setting up Tevni showed up along with spectator Caleb from nearby Ft. Loudon. By 12:30P the sky was filled with nice cumies and the wind was picking up. By 1P Charley, Tim, and Anthony showed up, and it was on. I launched at 1P from the pad into strong conditions and got up easily. 10 minutes later I was on the deck down by Rt. 16, trying to survive a flush cycle. Flew back north below the ridge and had to scratch and claw to get back up. Finally got a couple hundred feet of altitude flying along a lift line away from the ridge. Ward joined me in the air and we found the lift to be of the dreaded "balance beam" shape. A strong headwind appeared and Ward and I pointed into the strong WNW wind and flew along lift lines out into the valley to the north of launch. Around this time I spotted a redtail hawk at my altitude about 50 yards in front of me. It was flying in the same direction, so I gently snuck up on it, thinking it would detect me and split-S for the deck. It never detected me, and I ended up gently "rear ending" the poor bird with my leading edge just outboard from the nose toward the left wingtip. The bird fell over on its back and "slid" along the leading edge a few feet before falling off and recovering controlled flight. It squawked its displeasure at me and flew away to play swoop and dive. Tevni joined us in the air and had a nice soaring flight before he landed in the main LZ. Ward ended up climbing to 4K'+ MSL and landing OTB, while I flew out and landed on the golf course driving range in turbulent conditions. Ended up banging the left corner of the control frame, producing a kink in the already slightly bent basetube. Time to replace the basetube. Tev retrieved me from the golf course. Thanks Tev! Back at launch the 3 remaining pilots (plus Blaine, John M., and Eric) all got into the air and soared in the smoother conditions, with John the last to land around 7P in the main LZ. Charley landed on the golf course driving range; I ended up retrieving him. 9 for 9 today for soaring flights . Bacil
