Midwest Championships 2017
Hi all, Kris Grzyb, Greg Dinauer and I are putting on an aerotow competition in Whitewater, WI from June 4-10th. We will have a sport and open class race to goal format. It will be run similar to the East Coast Championships that Highland held for many years. The conditions in Whitewater are remarkably similar to the Delmarva Peninsula with open farm land all around. Flights over 100 miles happen almost every year and generally light winds make for good out and return and triangle tasks. Lake Michigan is 50 miles away so convergence conditions are quite frequent. Whitewater is a college town so obviously has ample lodging, restaurants and bars. The towing will be done out of Gutzmer's Twin Oaks Airport which is a nicely groomed facility similar to Ridgely. Whitewater is centrally located between Milwaukee and Madison, Wi and Rockford, IL. Each are about 45 minutes away and Chicago is about 1 1/2 hours to the southeast. Several CHGPA pilots are already planning on attending and I'd like to invite you all to come and fly in beautiful Wisconsin next June. You can register at: https://airtribune.com/midwest-2017/info.

Re: Midwest Championships 2017
Sounds like a great place to fly in June and I'am strongly considering going to the Midwest Championships 2017.
Should know for sure in the next few weeks and hope we can be a bunch of CHGPA pilots going.
There might be many more video's about Midwest Championships; but, found these two video's from 2011, which should tell a lot and do think it looks great.
Check it out at https://youtu.be/ktUah-QCk-4 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B435ExYPg04, Clifton, IL
Though, this time at Twin Oaks Airport, Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Re: Midwest Championships 2017
I am planning on making the trip. Getting the opportunity to tow up over farmland where the flying is good and the landing options plentiful make for great fun and no stress flying. It would be great to get some other CHGPA pilots signed up for the meet.

I have also registered. Need to do an aero tow road trip in the spring to knock the rust off.

I flew at Whitewater just a couple months ago for my AT rating and it's a fun little flight park. If the comp didn't require experienced comp pilots only I would count myself in.

Josh,
One pilot said following:
- “I think sport class was created for young pilots on less performing wings to break into the comp scene without having to compete against the experience competition pilots on topless wings.”
Other pilots said following:
- “Experienced comp pilots in the sport class will make newcomers feel... inadequate”.
- “Some will graduate to the Open Class, some will not. Idea is that you have a class where the average guy can go and compete, that is why it is called a competition. There is plenty of learning going on, believe me.”
So, if you have H3 and AT, don’t understand why you can’t signed up for the Midwest competition and for Sports Class?
Though, the best place to start, is probably in the Green Swamp Sport Classic Hang Gliding Competition, there more experienced pilots will teach you and you will learn what is possible.
For me it is a lot about getting to fly more XC, getting the opportunity to improve and learn from more experienced pilots, during a whole week and have so far learned a ton of things.
Have been to totally 3 Sports Class Competitions and love it. Midwest Comp will be my 4th; though, one day I would love to graduate to the Open Class, but not there yet.

Re: Midwest Championships 2017
I've just registered for sport class and sent my payment.
Greg/Knut - looking for a tried-and-tested retrieve driver?!
Super excited about this.
Am also thinking seriously about doing the Green Swamp sport event in March - anyone else?

Richard,
That is great news that you will be at the Midwest too.
Yes, definitely count me in for the retrieval. So glad that we have a driver already, thanks to Angelyn.
About the Green Swamp sport: Would love to go, but can't go to Green Swamp sport this year, as much as I would love to. Will be focusing on the MidWest this year.
