I'm staying with ellis for Thanksgiving. Would love to fly woodstock again. I suppose the rondevouz is the bridge field? What time would people be there for ride sharing?

The rendezvous will be at the launch. There are no trespassing signs on every power pole bordering the bridge field. We are NOT to land there. We have verbal permission to land on the grassy field across the road from the fenceline to the NW. It is a long glide out from the ridge and demands some expertise to make on iffy days. Tomorrow should be soarable for most of the day, but still, it is a long glide out. A good amount of altitude above launch (say 1K' over) should be in the bank before trying for the new "main" field. I am planning to escort some fledgling XCers to Front Royal Airport tomorrow. Should be a good day to try it, and we should be able to make the goal. Bacil

OK, I will assess before setting up, and wait to confirm easy soaring before attempting launch on my bagged-out falcon. It's too bad that one of the best sites in the east is no longer forgiving.

Roger that. Haven't been to Woodstock since the shift, but hoping to make it work. I'll have to meet at the LZ since I haven't been there yet.

With a single surface, I too will be looking for good conditions. Time to put the over the ridge California practice to good use.

What time are people planning to meet at the LZ?

Bacil, the last I had heard was the bridge field was available when there are no crops at all in it. That the farmer was upset when we landed there even though the crop was minimal. Anyone else want to comment about this?

I talked to Gary Smith about this in depth. If my memory serves me correctly, Gary stated to me that we are NOT to land in the bridge field until further notice. The presence of NO TRESSPASSING FOR ANY REASON signs plastered on every power pole bordering the bridge field means just what it says. Gary has gotten the address of the actual landowner and forwarded it to me. The landowner lives in South Carolina very near my parents, which I am about to visit in a month for XMAS. I plan on contacting the landowner face to face to talk about her property when I visit my parents in a month. Bacil

1K' over is just a figure that I mentioned for safety's sake, a figure that will give you plenty of safety margin in case a headwind or sink (or both) greet you on the way out to the grassy field. On a bulletproof soarable day at Woodstock (tomorrow) gaining over a thousand feet above launch is statistically commonplace. There is the option of the field to the right of the former main LZ that has a square pond in it. It is easily reachable on a sled day. Don't know if whomever owns that field would appreciate it raining gliders there on a sled day. Bacil

Funny. In the good ole days the field with the square pond was explicitly off-limits.

The 1000 foot rule of thumb is perhaps even more useful to keep in mind at the end of a soaring flight, when it's typical to wait until sinking to launch level before heading out.

No field is off limits (once) in an emergency landing, which, by definition, is every landing we make (engine out/no engine). So we have a legal right to land anywhere (once) we deem appropriate for our safety. If our landing triggers a rash of crap from the landowner, the simple fact is that we cannot read NO TRESPASSING FOR ANY REASON signs from the air. But when we are warned verbally to not come back, then don't go back. That's the legal aspect. Bacil

Did the recent PG crash/accident occur in the "square pond LZ", in the field across from the bridge field or in the bridge field? Would be helpful to know for those that fly tomorrow.

No doubt Bacil will be up top around 9 am wondering where the hell everyone is, but since I'm not Bacil I'll eat a big breakfast and be up there a bit before noon. Would be nice to shuttle some vehicles down before flying.

The PG injury was at the small PG field to the left after the bridge going up the mountain.

Looks like solid ridge soaring conditions from one end of the Massanutten to the other – all day! Arriving early.
